Strobist is posting a useful series of articles on using optical slaves, for those of us that have been too cheap to spring for a good set of radio triggers. So far there are two parts and it looks like this series may be followed up by a Q&A.
Understanding and Using Optical Slaves, Pt. 1
Understanding Optical Slaves, Pt. 2
follow-up Q&A

These should be useful me -- my camera has no hot-shoe, and so no way to communicate with an external strobe except with its on-board flash. So far the only optical trigger I've found which it will set off is the pricy ($100) one -- there's a $20 one I haven't had a chance to try yet.

I picked up a SunPak Auto22 at the thrift store, but I need an optical trigger to set it off.

Thanks for the links.

I actually just ordered my first flash today, as well as an IR trigger. With any luck, I'll actually be able to figure out how to use my new toys once they show up.

Have you tried the Wein peanut slaves yet? They cost less than $20 @ and work pretty reliably for me. I have not tried them with my Powershot yet, but they do fire reliably for me.

I don't think so -- I didn't notice the names of the two models I tried in the store, but I know one was more expensive. I have a "referral" from a product distributor for a "Dot Line" model the store could order, but I haven't checked it out further yet. Thanks for the info ...
