My wife bought me this - I am well aware that I'm not good enough to deserve one - but ....

When I focus it makes a whirring noise for about 2 secons after - is this the IS motor ?

and

For its first trip I took it to a wrestling match and the autofocus was a dog - I did much better with my kit lens and my 50mm f2.8 - it was quite dark - I was on ISO 3200 f4 shooting at 1/60 or so - but the focus just went in and out, mostly it didn't focus at all, or if it did it was very slow. On the occasions when it did focus the pictures are extremely sharp - and it focussed much easier on dark things, wrestler's trunks for example, hardly at all on skin tones.

In normal light conditions the focus is fantastically quick and the sharpness is exemplary. Am I just asking too much to use the lens in these kind of light conditions ?

Number 1- Yep, that's your IS, you'll learn to love that noise. To use it to the greatest advantage, half-press to focus and hold for about 1 second more before taking the picture, that way the IS can really start to compensate for movement.. Also, learn to take a picture and go back to the half-press instead of fully releasing, it will maintain focus and keep the IS running...

Number 2 - Yes. :) Anything slower than 2.8 will not focus nearly as well in low light as a 2.8 or faster lens...

On to fluffier things...

Congrats on the new lens, that's a great piece of glass... And you do too deserve it. :)
