So, I found myself on a mountain this weekend armed with both a long lens and a wide angle.

Just for fun, I decided to shoot a comparison shot between 15mm and 400mm, nothing scientific, all of these images are processed slightly differently and therefore this is not really good data, but just a fun exercise to see what was possible.

I was shooting these from a distance of ~13.58 miles (measured with Google Earth), so atmospheric distortion starts to play a pretty big role in IQ, and these were afternoon shots, so the atmosphere wasn't really at it's very best, if I had taken these in the morning, I'm sure the air would have been quite a bit clearer.

The subject is Durango Colorado from the top of the La Plata Mountains..

So, here's the full frames, @ 15mm and 400mm

Here are the 100% crops @ 15mm and 400mm

And here is a groundhog that was hanging around up there

Cheers all, hope you enjoyed my little exercise..

I think its pretty awesome that a groundhog found himself an industrial strength burrow.

LOL, you are a true geek at heart, aren't you. :-)

I agree, looks like atmospheric conditions were a significant factor. Still amazing the difference in perspective, and on the wide end you weren't even radically wide!

I think the 15 mm shot is terrific. Would have been a great candidate for bracketing, then HDR tonemapping. Bring some detail in the mountain foreground out. Did you shoot in RAW? Process out a few JPEGs at different exposure levels, and see what Photomatix can do...
