For those who know the TV show "South Park" on Comedy Central, you know that South Park has been commonly ridiculing the fact that extremists do not wish for Muhammad to be shown in graphical form. South Park showed Muhammad in a cartoon a few years back, and played on him being censored, in a few episodes with no problem, and now, in their recent "200th Episode", he was shown in a bear costume, and all the sudden it's a huge deal.
The story here in the NYT.
I don't get it... this is acceptable but this is not!? And what happened to freedome of speech? If someone really wanted to stand by their prophet wouldn't the best thing to do be to stay out of it and prove that South Park is wrong? In addition, South Park isn't stopping anyone from being Muslim or enforcing their "non-muslim" beliefs on anybody. If you don't like it, change the channel, let idiots be idiots. But by reacting to what the creators of South-Park showed, aren't the extremists just belittling themselves in a way by trying to stop other people from expressing themselves?
I'm hoping this will strike up some interesting thoughts of discussion...

You have to admit. There are some things worth dying for. I don't think an episode of South Park is one of them. After all, the article states that "Mr. van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker and a critic of religions including Islam, was killed by an Islamic militant in Amsterdam in 2004 after he made a film that discussed the abuse of Muslim women in some Islamic societies." That type of film stands a lot better chance of showing the world problems in order to get them changed. The south park episode, while reaching a large audience, probably has more of a chance of irritating people and creating less tolerance and understanding. And yet people are receiving death threats.
While I think that the reactions of the extremists are horrifying, I wouldn't put myself or my family at risk over something that does nothing but ridicule. If I'm taking my life into my hands, I'd rather have it be for something more worthwhile.

Didn't I hear that the semi recent time square attempted bombing referenced the same episode?
The extremists have won yet again. The scare tactics worked.

You are right when you say there was a bombing in times square near the Comedy Central building, and it was most likely related to the episode. I believe you are wrong to say that the extremists have won. Watch this:

Trey and Matt are literally standing up to the extremists by NOT showing Muhammad. By honoring the requests of the extremists and not showing his body, but still showing how others are subject to ridicule as well, not just Muhammad, Matt & Trey proved that the extremists are willing to kill innocent children and people even when their beliefs (laws) are respected.
So, in that fact, I think that the episodes 200 and 201 were simply symbolism to the bigger picture. Really, it worked out perfectly for the meaning of the episode since the terrorists reactions to what was shown were life-threatening, and yet over a TV show that hasn't made a good episode in 7 years.
This is censorship, and the definition of censorship is basically, "I know something that I don't want other people to know s I will hide it from them so they can be left ignorant to it". Just as Matt and Trey said in the interview I posted above, the only reason people are making a big deal over this cartoon is BECAUSE the media makes a big deal about by censoring things out of fear. This fear by Comedy Central is what gives extremists their power.
In conclusion:
South Park: 1
Extremists: 0
