Every time I shut down my computer and restart, it wants to scan disc - esp my j-drive. I hit a key and it stops but if I miss it, it can't be stopped unless I hot reboot or let it finish (which takes hours) . It read this morning that it removed my monarch folder so I did a hot reboot. What can I do to fix this. I did let it scan all the discs a couple of weeks ago but I am scared it will remove my challenge entries. Why is it doing this? Any help so appreciated. |

I often have it coming up with that if I have a flash drive plugged in on bootup. It sees some errors on the disk's file allocation table. Usually it is just some corrupted and/or orphan file fragments. It's pretty safe to run, but back up the files to another drive before running it, just to be sure.. |

You can also turn the Scan Disk option off within the BIOS. This will prevent the scan disk from ever running, unless you tell it to. I actually did this to my system, but I do regular maintenance, Scan Disk, Defrag, Disk Cleanup, etc...
That is just an option, but you'd still want to make sure you do it on a regular basis from time-to-time. |

Thanks for the quick response Yo_Spiff. The files it wants to remove are on my back-up terabyte drive. So I will burn them to a DVD I guess.
Thanks Mystafet too .. Yeah, I am bad at scheduling regular clean ups/maintenance. I will turn off the darn thing and set it to run in the night .. once a week should be enough?

hi...
are you sure that is the scandisk?
is not a consistency check?
because in this case you can have some serious problems in your HD or in the controllers on the mainboard...
It could be that your hard drive is corrupted or failing. I would get your pertinent data transferred soon just in case.
You can run a diagnostic tool from your hard drive manufacturer that will tell you what condition your drive is in.

GiorgioBaruffi .. that's a scary thought ... where would I get that diagnostic tool? I am not very tech-smart about computers. Thanks for weighing in on this....maybe I should disconnect my j drive in the meantime?

you have to verify, when the computer starts, if is starting a simple scandisk or the consistency check, after that you can verify your drive with an utility that you can find on the site of the producer (Maxtor, Seagate, WD etc.)...
but, first of all, copy everything you do not want to lose on another drive (or DVD)...
ehm... you can call me only Giorgio (surname is too formal!) ;-)

Thanks ...... Giorgio :) I backed up all my files on my external j drive. The computer wants to scan that too when it starts up. Should I disconnect it from the computer or are the files safe in there? Thanks again for the help.

An update
As Giorgio stated, it was was a consistency check. I went to some info sites regarding that and followed a suggestion that disconnecting any external hard-drive might help. As soon as I disconnected my j-drive, I could reboot without the message.
M question is this.. does that mean that my 1 gig terabyte j-drive is getting ready to crash? It has all my work on it. Thank you for any suggestions. Maggie |

Hi Maggie...
sorry, but if you have backed up your file in your J unit (external HD) and is unit with problems... oh my God, you don't have made a good work for the safety fo your files...
i do not think that is the best solution, you have to backup your files on another support... |

Doesn't make me feel good .. kinda sick in the stomach.. here is what I am doing. I am backing up my terabyte drive to another one.. once that is done I will burn all the files and then back everything up to carbonite.. hopefully that will work .. have shots I won't get again - especially of my family - thanks so much Giorgio. |
