This is just a whining thread.
I sent my camera in (4th time in a year). I have a backup camera, a 20D, but that battery has been missing since the last time I sent in the 40D. (I'm wondering if I sent it in with the camera accidentally, and it didn't come back. Either that or it's really buried somewhere in the house.
Anyway. I have no working camera.
So I thought I'd whine instead.

You might as well comment on every shot on here then!
What's wrong with it? Nothing too damaging I hope.

doesn't always respond when I press the shutter button. I've been missing shots because of it. It's just that it's the 4th time in the past year that it's been sent in. So I think I'm just watching a slow, painful death.

The 20D uses the same batteries as the 40D does, so you are not cameraless after all. (Unless you sent your batteries in with the 40D, and I don't think they want you doing that.)

Surely pressing the button harder would fix that, wouldn't it?
I jest!

Actually, this time around they wanted the battery and a lens.
The lens was a dumb request, because it's happening with multiple lenses. But I did agree to send in the battery -- and I did. So yes, I'm cameraless.
(that's why the 20D battery wasn't in the 20D, I was using both -- charging one and using the other and swapping them out. Man that was convenient!

let me know how much it costs to fix ... mine does it too. I've been going with the "push the shutter button in and turn" technique ... kinda fixes it ... it's only a matter of time.

Would it work for y'all if you taped an IR shutter remote to where the shutter is and click that instead?
I know it's not ideal, but it might fix it for ye. Also it'd look kinda retro!

I'm hoping that it's still covered under warranty -- all three previous fixes have been shutter related. It worked fine until the last fix, when they replaced the entire shutter assembly. But since the camera seems to break every 3 months, I'm hoping that they consider this a repair warranty issue.

I was hoping for that response rather than the 'are you mad!?' one. Phfew.

How old is your camera, Wendy?
I think I would be causing a stink with Canon Customer Services! Easy enough to spread bad publicity around the world these days, the internet is great for spreading the news. In, fact you are doing a fine job of it now, just tell them to check out DPC!

Let me know what it costs to fix. I've been having the same issue. |

| I am sad for you. But I cannot decide if it is worse than finding yourself at a splendid planned destination only to find you are without card or without battery. |

| You can get more batteries dirt cheap. It will get you shooting again, and give you some more spares when you do get the 40D back I have several of these, that I bought last year on Amazon, and they have been working just as well as the Canon batteries. |

Well......I have a Nikon you could borrow......8>)
Seriously, I'd write a "Woe is me, gosh golly gee, I miss my camera.......again." letter and say how much your faith in Canon equipment has been shaken by this experience(s). Write that letter and send it to a zone customer service representative, and CC as many honchos' addys as you can find.
If that happened to me, I'd be done with it. That's too many times. It's not like you're bouncing it off things, and getting it wet all the time, right?

I would guess it's been pooped on by birds a few times and harvested by squirrels. |

The last experience, while completely frustrating to have to deal with, was actually very, very positive. They did replace the entire shutter assembly and mirror box, when it wasn't completely clear that it was necessary. I dealt with a manager who was able to get that through. I was incredibly pleased with that. It's too bad something else had to happen, because I thought I'd get another 2 years out of it, because of the new shutter. But now I'm back to being paranoid that it will kick out during a wedding that I'm set to shoot.

Nope -- the bait camera is my old film camera (no one noticed, though) :D

Well, after three previous breakdown, a replacement camera is all I would settle for, or switch brand...and no, I'm not starting a Nikon/Canon war. Judging by the comments others have made here about their 40Ds, Canon have a problem and need to start grovelling to their loyal users! |

If it was newer, then I'd probably have a leg to stand on. But it gets a lot of use and it's over 3 years old, now. (granted, it should last a heck of a lot longer than that, but I don't think they'd consider replacing a 3 year old camera.)

| So you just accept that Canon 40Ds have built-in self destruct after three years? That you need to replace your camera every three years, regardless of usage? I don't think so. Remember, the past year you have had limited use of your camera as it has been in Canon repair centre as much as you have used it. A polite letter, stating the problems, the lost business etc to Nice Mr Canon boss is in order. |

Yeah.....I gotta agree. Both my D70s, and my D200 see some rough service by normal standards, and they show the wear. BUT......they are sturdy as I would expect a higher end camera to be. I'm mortified with the amount of trouble you've had.
