I'm sorry if this topic has already been covered. If it has I will take my lashings with a wet noodle and not whimper once ;)
I downloaded a zip file containing 10 images to my workshop folder. The file was 1.99MB. When it finally uploaded, it occupied nearly 10MB of space in my portfolio. That would be almost 10% of my portfolio allotment for 10 images. Each of the individual images was +/- 200kb. How was nearly 8MB of space used that wasn't from the images? In the past I have uploaded images (in zip files) to my portfolio and I don't think this ever happened. |

They were 200kb each before or after zipping? If you zipped a 10MB group of files to 1.99MB, then uploaded them, they'd be back to 10MB after DPC unzipped them and mounted them, I think? Maybe I don't understand...

Image files don't compress that well usually. It's pretty unlikely for even the most robust of compression algorithms to be able to take a jpg down more than just a few percent. JPG is a natively compressed format, so it just won't get that much smaller.
This sounds odd.
Scooter, I'd recommend submitting a ticket and dealing directly with site admin. They will be able to help much more directly. |

Yeah, that's what I was thinking in retrospect... who could get that kind of compression anyway? Belay that thought...

Sounds to me like he might have grabbed a full-size file by accident.. |

Easier to do with the zip on your local machine than it is to do on DPC.. |

Thanks for your replies Robert, Cory, Keiran and Caree. It is possible that one of the images may not have been resized. I can't check my home computer now. I'll let you know at the end of the day. |

I just looked at each of your pix uploaded today, and none of them have a "view full size" button, which would indicate that they are at normal reduced size. You may have to take them down, and repost them one at a time to see if that solves the problem with file space. There may be another image not in that group that is big, and you may have only just noticed the problem when you uploaded the zip file.

Hey Waddy. Thx for the idea. I may have to delete them and start over. I made a mental note of my portfolio volume before I downloaded the zip file as my space is rapidly being filled. Before the zip file: 82.17 MB. After the zip was uploaded: >91MB. I deleted 2 images out of 10 and the volume is now 91.33 (if I remember correctly). |

it might not be a resize thing -- keep in mind if its not compressed for web it can still be huge... I had a 800 x 600 that uploaded at 1.4 mb because I forgot to compress it.... |

thx Caree. I'll check that again. I'm pretty sure I used the 'save for web' action in Photoshop and resized to 800 pixels on the long side at a quality setting around 60% in JPEG After doing that I saved the resized images to a zip file.
I'll check everything once I'm home and submit a ticket if I can't figure this out. It sounds like this isn't a common problem so it's likely that I did something incorrectly. |

Ok time to insert red faced smiley emoticon here but I don't have one lol I screwed up and missed one image that ended up being almost 8MB by itself. So it's been removed, re-sized and reinstated in the folder.
Thanks for all of those who had helpful suggestions. My humblest apologies for wasting your time. |

BWAHAHAHA. If that's the worst thing you do all week, I would call it a pretty good week!
I'm always happy to yammer on and pretend I know what I'm talking about. :) |

It must have been the one of NikonJeb. It takes a pretty big file to fit him in, with his size 13 blue ribbon boots.
