I never had anything over a 6 before! Hoping for a top ten and I didn't even know the challenge when I took the photo. :)

Just after rollover, I had my first "Why did I bother with this moment..." It's a horrible, horrible shot. I was so eager to get something in, I just took it, processed it, and didn't even think about it.
Moron! :)
I thought of self-DQ, but you know what? The average on here means slightly less than nothing given the different factors people use to rate photos. So who cares.
Besides, it's scoring higher today for some reason. In the 4.7 range. I fully expected a 3.x this morning. |

Hehehe, I just took mine and entered it. I had ideas but couldn't get any just right...but heh I'm not complaining. Don't expect any comments as there is nothing you can really say about my image.

Phooey! All was going so well this morning -- 6.1+ and climbing. Now suddenly it's at 6.02 and going the wrong direction. |

Originally posted by mycelium: Originally posted by retake: Okay, I'm still new here. With 'shoehorn' pictures, how do you score them? I looked at both the Chaos & Order challenge entries and thought to myself "I must not have understood the subject." However, some of the photos that don't seem to fit the subject are well executed (in my non-professional opinion). So what do you do with that?! :) |
Do whatever you like :) Scoring is unavoidably subjective. Some people have complex formulae that they use to calculate their scoring based on a number of factors. Some people take off a bunch of points for a photo that they think doesn't meet the challenge even if they otherwise like it. A photo that might have been a 9 if it met the challenge becomes a 5. Others take everything on good faith and assume a legitimate connection to the challenge, even if they don't see it or agree with it. It's entirely up to you. |
Good suggestions. As mycelium said, it is totally subjective. Personally, for me, if an image looks like a shoehorn, I ask myself the following questions:
- Would the photographer have taken this image with the theme in mind?
-- IF Yes - I give benefit of doubt and rate it as a normal entry on all its merits.
-- IF No - Is the theme apparent at least partially in the image? (E.g. in an animal challenge, if the picture is of a gorgrous Sunset, yet I see an animal filling a good part of the image, is in light, and in details).
--- IF Yes, you get a partial credit for meeting the theme, the rest is on technical merits.
--- If No, I am pretty close to punishing the entry for a shoehorn, but I give you a last chance. Take the above example image again. If the picture is of a gorgeous Sunset, and I see a tiny silhouette of the animal in a corner, the image gets my spit-vote. I will subtract at least 2 points from an otherwise normal score.
In fact had I voted in this challenge on my own image, these rules would make me deduct at least 1 point from my own image for not making the attempt to match the theme obvious:-) |

Funny how there are 2 almost identical photos, one is entered in Chaos and the other is in Order. |

There are wide regions of overlap between the two. |

I wish you could explain why your picture meets the challenge besides the title. Im being told a lot my pic this week didn't meet the challenge and sure it is hurting the score but still holding at a 6.5094 with 53 votes. I see multiple elements in the photo that define order and many people see it and others do not otherwise my score be much lower. I wouldn't of posted it if I didn't think it met the challenge..

I wonder if it was ever discussed to let the author comments (if they are available) be visible with an entry besides the title. As usual, if the comments give away TMI about identity of the image, the voter(s) can request a DQ. Wonder what everyone here thinks about that?

Can of worms. We should be voting on the photo, not the accompanying essay. If we want to judge art by its verbal descriptions, we can go to MOMA. |

It would be nice to get one ten! :D Unlikely however for me.

I apologise if I am one of them. I feel like every comment is me saying "I'm not sure if this fits the challenge." I do mark down if I feel that the photographer just took a good photo and wants it to fit...not that i have ever done that :P |

I was surprised at how many shots didn't seem to fit the challenge -- this seemed like the easier of the two challenges.

Stats: You have rated 72 of 72 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.6944.
well I may of used to ORDER a bit loosely - I did try and see how the photographer was trying to perceive order and not mark down if I could find any sense of order (only found 2 that I didnt think had any order to them) but my scores were VERY high. I think the shots were amazing!!

Still my highest score so far...
I was the opposite and found it hard to find Order in a lot of the shots. I think i had images in my head and only a few are how I thought they would be. |
