I dunno... long story short... this chick up the street has the lens that Cory just bought... the Canon 100mm Macro lens.... she says it has Fungus on the lens and is selling it on craigslist for 100 bucks. I looked at it today and physically it looks to be in good condition but you can see the spots when you take a photo. My birthday is on the 16th and my husband said hed get it for me but I dont know if its cleanable or not... never dealt with something like that....

Sounds like it would need to go to Canon for a cleaning... No idea how much that would cost though.. Anyone know? |

Are you sure it's the new 100MM macro with USM? or is it the older one without USM? Fungus grows INSIDE the lens. Meaning it has to come all the way apart and be cleaned. It can be a costly repair. It only grows inside the lens from moisture getting in somehow. Be careful it could be an expensive adventure. |

| A friend of mine had a lens with fungus... he wrapped it in aluminum foil (sides and bottom, leaving the lens exposed) and set it in the sun to let it cook out the fungus. He swears by it. |

I would still be worried about this seriously reducing contrast (one of the most amazing things about the 100mm Macro...).
Even if you do kill the fungus, how would this remove it from the lens elements? |

JustCaree, have you thought about trying to work out a "let me try to fix it first" sort of deal?
I might consider it IF they would let me attempt to clean it first... Then again, I might also offer less.. I figured I could risk $50 and walk away without too much pain. |

It still seems like even if you killed all the fungus you would have residual crap left on the elements, and would have to have it cleaned internally anyway. Dead fungus is still fungus, after all.
Me... I'll keep enjoying my dry climate :) |
