Okay, my canon 40D seems to be having problems yet again! This time it's a different issue.

The last time I sent it in, they replaced the shutter and the mirror box.

Now the camera doesn't respond well when I push the button. When I press it halfway to focus, it doesn't respond about 1/3 of the time. I have to keep pressing it multiple times before it finally tries to find the focus. It's not like it's searching for the focus, it just doesn't do anything. It doesn't matter what lens I'm using, it's happened with multiple lenses.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be and how serious it is?

sounds pretty serious to me. i think i'd call canon asap and arrange to send it in for repair. this sounds likes something that can only get worse.

Secondary issue: It's getting really grainy when I shoot indoors. I used to set it to 1600 and shoot without flash, and while it wasn't perfect, it wasn't too bad. (I'd do Vacation Bible school photos, and it really wasn't much of an issue.) However, this was shot at 640 ISO, and it's very grainy.

It's a secondary issue, the lack of response is the biggest problem, but I didn't know if they were related (computer having problems, or something similar.)

make sure you note EVERYTHING to canon, because they will only look at and/or fix what you tell them. if you're going to need a camera, you should make arrangements for another one because it sounds like you're heading for trouble if you head out relying on this one...

bump. Anyone have any experience with this? (thanks, Skip)

I think you're probably about ready to switch to Nikon..

Listen, it is possible that you've had enough trouble with this camera that you might be able to talk a supervisor or someone into deciding it's a lemon.. I would probably try the loyalty program, or write an open letter to a few people @ Canon..

Doesn't your camera have some freakishly odd serial #? I do wonder if that indicates that there's something "interesting" about that body.. In any case I would act like I thought it did when talking to the imps over at Canon..

The primary issue sounds like a problem with the shutter button itself. When I sent them the 20D last year that was continuously actuating the shutter (and the button did not feel right), I was pretty sure it was the button itself. They quoted me the generic price for a shutter repair.

If that's the case, maybe I can argue that it should still be under warranty, since it was the shutter that was repaired 2 months ago...

Though I still wonder why everything is so much grainier.

You might want to do a master reset of your cameras parameters, however you would do that with a Canon. That could even be the problem with the shutter. These things have so many options that some obscure setting you never see unless you're three levels deep in the menus could screw up something. If you do a lot of custom stuff with the settings you might want to spend a moment and write down these things before you do the master reset. Then like someone else commented, it's time to write some peeps at Canon and complain. Switching to Nikon might be a bit rash though. :)

Has the little battery been replaced recently? If not, perhaps try that.

I had the issue about a year ago and found out how to FIX IT! My 40D was under warranty and after lots of digging I found it is a issue with oxidation on the shutter button

EASY FIX!!!

turn camera off, Depress shutter and while holding down with pressure, twist shutter button clockwise and counter clockwise and it will shine the connections INSIDE!!! Do it once an it will be fixed for a year. If you do not do it good enough, you will find out. It WAS real annoying and I am glad I did NOT get the shutter button replaced.

worked on friends 20d and a friends 30D too!

That is wayyyy annoying... Nothing like yelling at the top of your lungs.. Or for that matter presenting your idea as a hard-fast fact that you are absolutely sure what the issue is... You posted this exact same thing in Wendy's last thread.. I do appreciate that you are sharing a neat trick to potentially fix the issue, but the RESOLVED stuff is really, really unneeded and mildly offensive.

Cheers Derf, I'm sure it's unintentional, but could you possibly just not use the terrible RESOLVED banner? Thanks..

You had me very nervous... I was thinking "Do I try this? If it breaks it even farther, then I'm in big trouble." But in looking at it, the button does turn, so I figured it's not doing anything drastic.

I've tried it, and it would be so wonderful if it works! Thanks for the info! (I didn't remember it from the previous thread, because I was having a different issue, so I appreciate you reposting it.)

Thanks Derf! And Wendy, being the owner of two bodies in the same series, I would be very interested in your findings on this...

Just curious....did it work?
07/04/2010 11:47:17 AM · #18
Kind of... It seemed to work for a little while, but then it started again. I tried again, but it still seems to be doing it occasionally. I do think it might be a little better than it was, though. Thanks for the info.

Wow, just wow.

Cory, can you stop using multiple y's where only one is needed. You've ruined my day and most probably my life with your use of multiple y's in a word. I can't get over it, my life is nothing now and I'm going to mix myself a drink of Drano with a little Liquid Plumber to make the pain go away.

Just teasing, in a semi serious way. ;þ
