My 20 year old daughter got a six week summer job at Stanford University that starts next week. We booked her a (non-refundable) flight so she arrives at San Francisco International on Wednesday afternoon. She just discovered that she may be getting there a day earlier than she should and the housing at Stanford may not be available until Thursday, so she'll need a place to stay Wednesday night.
She has mentioned staying at a hostel. My questions are:
Has anyone ever stayed in a hostel?
Are they safe for a 20 year old girl traveling alone?
Do you know of any decent(clean and safe)hostels in San Francisco?
Are there areas of SF that she should completely avoid all together if she decides to take the day to see the city and stay over night?
Any other info or idea you can suggest to keep she safe would be greatly appreciated.

There's a great hostel at Fisherman's Wharf. It's run by Toddster's recommended group. My kids stayed there once. It's terrific, and right in the most interesting area for daytripping. You can walk to the Golden gate. I checked availability, they have dorm space available that night for a woman. $29.00...

Thanks for the info guys. She finally found out that she will be able to stay at Stanford that night. Not in her assigned room, but in the health suite. It'll have to do. |

she could stay at a firehouse. They are all safe houses and will offer one night free room and board. I knew someone that would do that in New Orleans.

She should avoid the Tenderloin, which should be pretty easy, since it's rather far from most possible tourist areas (e.g., Chinatown, the Haight, Fisherman's Wharf). |
