So if you could only own three Canon lenses, which ones would they be?

For your camera, crop sensor? For best coverage and excellent optical quality, Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

On the FF cameras, swap the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L for the 10-22mm.

Perfect choices. Of course Why would you every stop with 3?? lol.

But really this question is difficult to answer. The above are a perfect combination to cover most of your needs but if you mainly want to shoot sports or wildlife then I would choose different. If you mainly wanted landscapes or architecture then I would choose different. If it is mainly bugs and macro or products then still different. But for general use I agree with Bear_Music

So you'd go 24-70 2.8L over 24-105 f4L...If you had to take cost into account.

I like the f/2.8, and the 70-105 range is covered by the 70-200mm anyway. So yes. I might conceivably take the 24-105mm for the FF, because 70mm isn't much reach on FF, but I do like that f/2.8...

Incidentally, I'd prefer to make it 4 lenses and include Canon's 100mm f/2.8L IS... I am loving that lens...

For the greatest flexibility, probably the 24-70/2.8L, the 70-200/2.8L IS, and a 50mm prime. I might consider trading the 50mm prime for the 16-35/2.8L if my photography included a lot of landscape work. And I'd *have* to cheat and sneak in a 1.4x converter :-)
But in reality, I could never stop at three, LOL. One look at my profile, and you will know that to be fact.

Previously, my vacation lenses have been 10-22, 28-135, 90 macro (Tamron) and 100-400. I now have a lighter and much smaller telephoto zoom for travel - 70-300. I'm even thinking of leaving the 28-135 at home next time so will travel with the 10-22, 90, 70-300 (and a P & S with range 24-720 :D)

My vacation gear - the 7D, the 10-22, the 24-105. And a spare battery, a charger, a card reader, and a laptop. The other lenses normally have to stay at home, though I have been known to throw in the Lensbaby because it doesn't weigh anything at all.

Well, my personal favorites...100mm f/2.8L IS Macro, 17-40 f/4L, 85mm f/1.8, rarely use anything else, in that order.

ETA: If I could own it...I would love to add a Zeiss 21mm Distagon T* 2.8 to replace my wide angle zoom.

16-35mm f/2.8L
50mm f/1.2L
180mm f/3.5 macro

Ya, I wouldn't be able to do telephoto sports (180mm too slow to focus) and I don't have a ton of reach, but I don't tend to shoot that way. The 50mm is for low light and the macro is for macro. :)

Right now I have almost this setup, but thw 16-35 is a 24-105 (but my boss has a 16-35 I can borrow) and the 50mm is a f/1.4.

You have IS on that 100mm? That explains a lot! You're young and strong - I'm old and shaky. Wanna trade? I'll throw in, oh, I don't know, cookies or something. Storebought, not homemade, but the thought will be there.

They are both sharp enough it's unlikely to make a difference.

You'll have to take the good Doc's word on that - I've never used the 24-70 so can't speak to that one. And a lens is only as sharp as the user who knows how to use it. In my case, I can make the sharpest lens all blurry! :-)
