Oops, nevermind, I think I got it...
In the camera menu I toggled back and forth a couple of times between PTP and PC conneciton, and things seem to have gotten happy. Downloading right now, hopefully it will work out.

I spent about 12 hours flying around in a helicopter yesterday, taking photos and some video. It's bush work, so I brought my Canon Rebel XT instead of my 40D. I used an 8 Gig CF card, which usually lives in my 40D. I formatted it in the Rebel before taking any shots. The shots are on it and chimpable in the Rebel.

Back when I always used the Rebel, I'd transfer files to my laptop via USB cable. I later upgraded to my 40D and installed all the related Canon software, which I suppose overwrote the Rebel software?

Now, when I plug the Rebel in via USB I get three quick bonk sounds, but no option to download files, nor a drive to navigate to in Explorer.

I've tried putting the CF card in two different, cheap, USB readers. The USB reader drive(s) show up, but with no contents.

I hope I didn't just blow a $15,000 helicopter ride! :-O

Any help!?!?

The software for the Rebel and xxD cameras are different. I found this out late last year. I was helping out with setting up for Santa photos at the company Xmas party. They wanted to do tethered shooting with a Rebel and send the pics straight to a color printer. They could not get it to work. When they finally gave up and allowed me to have a look at it, I realized the Canon EOS utility they had installed was for the 40/50D and it did not support the Rebel. The husband of the woman in HR had a 50D while she had a Rebel, so she had grabbed the wrong disk, not knowing there was a difference.

I don't know why the CF card is showing empty, but try some recovery software on it, hopefully the files are still there.

I recommend you try to draw or paint the images from your own memory.

Why not just use the 40d to shoot the screen of the XT :p
