Hey Kiwis,
I am making plans on hitting NZ sometime soon and I wondered what is the best time to hit NZ weather wise?
I was thinking end of November or sometime in Feb. Are those good months to hit down under?
I am hoping to get nice warm weather so I can hike the mountains or hit the beach ;)
Thanks in advance :)

I'm sure all the Kiwis will agree with me that November is a bit early but February would be great.
I went the middle of December and it was good, but the weather definitely continues to improve. Are you going to the north or south island? |

Some places are just likely to be more rainy in general. The west coast of the south island, for example. If you like more rural settings and doing the outdoorsy thing, the south island might be better. If you want the more metropolitan experience, hit Auckland in the north. The north island also has some cool geothermal stuff to see. I rented a car and drove around the south island for two weeks and it was positively amazing. The people were great, the scenes were amazing, and I can't imagine a better vacation. I went to the south because it had more of the sort of thing that I was more interested in. You'll also love how simple it is to deal with the airports there.
Oh one thing to not forget, since you seem interested in doing outdoors stuff- if you bring equipment of any kind, make sure it is very, very clean. They check that stuff at customs, and they take their biosecurity seriously. Any tents, boots, or things like that should be carefully cleaned to make sure they don't have dirt in/on them. If you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask and I could give you my opinion as a fellow foreigner.
ETA: I should note that just because it rains a lot there, it's sorta wild and cool to see. It's a rainforest... so really it's pretty wild to see that and be in it if you've never experienced that before. Just don't expect it to be sunny all the time. It happens, but it rains a LOT on the west coast too.

Jan/Feb are the best two months of the year, December will have a higher chance of rain but the weather will still be ok.
Skip the cities for anything but meeting up with other DPCers (ie: me) and hit the scenery - the South Island has the most varied and best but you'll need a car to see it best. |

Jamie, if November & February are your two time frame choices, then go with February. Like Nuzzer said, Jan/Feb is usually the best months for weather & also all the schools will have just finished their school holidays.

Being from Wisconsin, I have to say that the worst weather NZ has to offer is Late May/Early June - mid August. But I am always comparing the winter here to Wisconsin winter. I hear some of the locals say it is freezing when it is around 50 degrees here and I think to myself that this is actually a nice spring or fall type of day. The weather has been absolute crap here the past few weeks though, Cold and Raining even scraping windshields in the mornings a few days this week. I guess my point is By the Kiwi Standards the best months are Jan and Feb. By American Standards Late Nov through end of March would be ideal weather. Then again you being from Texas where it is obviously much warmer than Wisconsin in the Winter Months, The cooler temps might not appeal to you either. Aim for sometime after New Years and you should end up with some nice warm days and evenings. |

That's in "Windy" Wellington I presume, it's been quite a good autumn/winter so far up near Auckland. |
