The best way for many of us. Just use it and develop a feel for what is the appropriate settings. It helps to have an understanding the theory behind it, however. |

I agree LOL having an understanding of theory helps -- just gaining understanding from here is helping me learn so much |

I bought a lens hood for my 15-85 from ebay and it is excellent. Even had the flocking inside. Have kept this seller for future hood purchases (canon should just supply them!!!). |

Dont risk to burn your cameras sync circuit with that toys.
Gather some bucks and go for a lumopro or vivitar. They are about 80 100 usd. |

Agree on the Lumopro. Maybe on the Vivitar, though the newer iteration has had some iffiness quality-wise. That Yongnuo did NOT receive good marks from Strobist users. Reliability was questionable for enough people that I would definitely second guess the purchase. There are a good number of videos that depict that flash as the biggest Satan creation ever... randomly firing and at different powers with no means of controlling it....period. MPEX backs up the Lumopro, so even if you get a screwed up unit, which is unlikely, you can get a functioning one easily and quickly.
As far as the Vivitar... while the new 285hv is not as strongly built/functional, the old one is a behemoth. Too bad all the Strobist followers ate up the old ones off ebay... |

I'll take your word on that. Perhaps I'm thinking off all the mentions of the Yongnou RF-602 triggers that always come up when some one wants a set of "poverty wizards". |

Here is where I heard about them. They may have improved since then, but I'd be wary. The initial video that was linked isn't available anymore, but basically it consisted of the flash firing intermittently for no apparent reason regardless of what was done with the buttons. There is a MKII out now it appears, but I don't know about that. I have a sneaking suspicion that at a certain point (the point where these are priced) you begin to really hit the wall of "you get what you pay for." I'd much rather get something with a more backed up product like the LumoPro ones or a used Nikon. |
