I was talking to smardaz -- hoping he was kidding about contacting your emailer. |

Just to put forth an alternate idea here -- I actually don't think this was a personal attack whatsoever, and the photographer sending that email probably didn't even look at your photos in the ad... Let me explain --
Some say (if you believe many of the blogs/twitterings/etc) there are a growing number of GWC (Guys/Girls With Cameras) posting to various online forums, classified ad sites, etc, etc -- and undercutting "real" photographers by offering free services and/or heavily discounted services. A number of semi-high-profile photographers (at least those with widely visited blogs) have posted public replies to these ads, as well as parody ads substituting other services for photography, to make fun of the original ads. One such blog post made the rounds in a forum post here at DPC a month or two ago, I believe.
Now, whether or not such a problem really exists is beyond the scope of this discussion -- but I assert it is a fact that some people believe it is a real problem, and it is affecting the industry overall.
My take on this is that the photographer who sent you that email is one of those people and is just doing "their part" to harass people they percieve to be "GWC" -- you posted a classified ad with rather discounted service, they assumed you were part of this "growing problem," and sent you a canned email to bother you. They probably send a dozen or more such emails every day in reply to similar ads.
I wouldn't sweat it at all -- just ignore it and move on. Just my take.

It gets even crazier....I have a photographer friend who received the exact same message on Monday. So cdrice, you are right about them just sending the email to whoever. The sad thing is that apparently someone contacted this studio about the email and it's not even them. Someone is using their email/name and pretty much slandering their name. This shows even more what time of a person he/she is. |

Yup, sounds like they are just trying to harrass folks they think are undercutting the market. Happens quite a bit, I believe. So, just blow it off -- def. not a personal message whatsoever.

Maybe, maybe not... If you want to forward me the email with full headers (my site/email is in my profile), I can do some geekiness and possibly help figure out where it came from. |

Are you losing your mind? That email bothered you? Your photos are fine. After reading that email I thought I was going to see some serious crapola on you site. I looked over 3 shoots and in two minutes dertermined the emailer was a dope.

It is a problem to a certain extent, but it's not just within the professional photography community, it's any professional field. Cousin Ralph can fix a toilet cheaper than that $75 per hour plumber, your neighbor Ted can change the transmission in your car cheaper than the Ford dealer, and the guy down the street can clean out your computer cheaper than a reputable computer specialist.
It's the caveat emptor thing......and all too many people, both pro photographers, and potential clients are just becoming that much more aware of the issue now that everyone and his brother can get a DSLR at Target for $400. Trouble is, there is a certain segment of the professional industry that thinks that somehow moaning about the problem and trashing the GWC is somehow going to fix the problem. Just do your best to promote what you do in a decent and professional manner and ignore the rude people that stoop to this kind of behavior.
Your work's quite nice.

I could raise my prices. But out here in Utah there really are so many photographers. My prices are in the middle, not on the low low end and definitely not on the high end. I'm afraid if I raise my prices, that I won't get much business because of all the other people charging less haha. |

I think your work is brilliant Madelyn and that the email is best ignored, keep doing what you do great and charge what you're comfortable charging :). |

If your prices are "in the middle" for your market then I retract the suggestion -- I had gotten the (mis)impression that that your prices were way lower than others in your area, and had not actually checked your (or your competitors') site myself. |

I still suggest raising your prices anyway. Seriously... most couples don't buy photography based solely on price.
Since you're in Utah, you might consider getting in touch with dwterry, his wedding work is top notch and he's in SLC. I haven't met him in person (yet), but not only is he a really good photographer that gets a lot of work, he's a super nice guy.
ETA: I don't think you should raise your prices to the ridiculous level, but certainly to the top of the middle and not the middle of the middle.

I'm actually good friends with David. He is a great guy. I don't actually know his pricing. Maybe I'll consider raising my prices a little. I will look around and compare my prices again with other photographers and see what they are charging. I definitely just want to make sure I'm not over charging people for what they are getting. I think I am a good photographer, but I don't think I am an amazing one. |

Maddie, your shots are lovely, esp as you're not supposed to have any real life experience or training ;-)
Keep up the great work! |

i've spent five years breaking into 'professional photography', and i've found those already there to be in two camps...one group is so secure in their mastery of their craft and the establishment of their business that they freely give advice and share work; the other is so insecure in their marketing abilities that they behave like rabid, cornered dogs, lashing out and attacking everything that seems to encroach upon their turf.
i feel bad for that second group, especially when they go out of way to behave badly.
by the same token, i think there's a real problem when the internet and a digital camera can put anybody in the business...What's the Point of Being a Professional?
maddie, you're doing just fine! just keep on doing what you're doing, raise your rates, and don't worry about who gets left in your dust! |

Yesterday one of the second group came by with a framed aerial photo of my property. He did not like my honest but polite assessment of his marketing tactics, which are a little on the olde-fashioned side...c'mon, in this day and age, it makes not much sense to spend so much time/energy/$$$ getting shots that you are not at all sure anyone will want to buy. Asking way too much $$ for them too.
And the shot itself...well he didn't like it when I pointed out that it showed off my green roof and the heavy green canopy of trees surrounding it, with patches of green lawn, and a sliver or two of brick...oh except for the gravel driveway which is grey, and the roof of my car which is dark blue, and a small tawny blob that he said was a dog (it was my 16-year-old cat, Druli). But I let him live..this time. :-)
Makes me appreciate all the more a certain C-TR who is most definitely a member of the first group! I now know almost as much about Canon L-series lenses as he does! ;-) |

The email you received was totally uncalled for and unwarranted. He or she that sent the email showed how unprofessional they are by even sending such an email. |
