Also if you don't have lights (I don't either) window light can be pretty nice and soft, the side lighting adds a little more dimension to the face you just have to pay attention to where you place the model and the direction of the light.
some portraits using the same window light:
this one show more of the window, place your model away from the wall so you don't get a shadow behind them

Yes, natural light is your friend. I suggested to more than one entrant in the self-portrait challenge that they would have been more well-served with natural light coming through a large window, than with their tiny dead-on flashheads.
Filtered natural light almost always works, no matter what kind of photos you take.
