A set of maps on Flickr of about 80 cities, showing the the frequency of photographs taken by locals (blue dots) and tourists (red dots).

Could be very useful when traveling to be able to identify the good locations that are off the tourist-beaten path. (Or alternately, to find those great touristy shots) The one of Dallas, for example, shows a huge red blob covering Dealey Plaza (The location of the Kennedy assassination), while the eastern end of downtown and Deep Ellum have a more evenly spread cluster of blue dots.

Problem is we don't know how many of the photos by locals are family snapshot-type things as opposed to actual objects of "scenic interest" (unless you're interested in street candids, that is).

I looked at the Dallas map and noticed a lot of Flickr members have been adding note boxes identifying what is at a particular area. That can help. I added one to the Dallas map for the Deep Ellum club district. If the data included the types of cameras used, one could identify the snapshot heavy areas from the local photography enthusiast areas. Still, it's pretty cool.

Yeah, the notes help. The San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley map is eerily predictable in its patterns ... ;-)
