Okay, so it didn't score so great. No big deal.

However, it did accomplish two things --

First, it scored in the 3rd percentile. That means as soon as I get a 1% and a 94%, I will have at least one picture in every percentile ranking.

Secondly, and this is the big one, I have, for the first time in over 8 years and almost 500 entries (this was 497), had a picture go all week in voting and receive NO COMMENTS. None. nada. zilch. nil. I've been waiting on this for several months now, and had two or three that made it to the last hour of voting, and some blessed soul would leave a comment, and it was off to waiting another week.

:)

Ha, and I was going to comment on this one, guess this is one of those times it was better that I didn't. For what it's worth I gave it a 7.

uh, yea. (read the rest of that line -- I've been waiting for this for several months now).

Honestly, I was surprised that such a low scoring image had no comments; it's usually mine that are in the middle of the pack that have almost earned that "honor."

You can thank me later for your "2" ;)

And I almost commented on the DNMC aspect, but I figured you knew that already :)

The dictionary definition you posted in your notes is interesting. If one goes strictly by that, yourself and all the people who entered shots of children met the challenge topic head on, and the folks like me that took the Charlie Brown/Snoopy angle did not meet the challenge at all.

I usually tend to think that if I need a dictionary to figure out if it's DNMC, then it's DNMC. :)

I was totally into the packing peanuts, I loved the charlie brown stuff (even if most of it was pretty bad), and I "got it" that kids can be referred to as peanuts.. But they're not, that's like taking a picture of an ugly girl and putting into a Dog challenge... I'm usually in on most of the stretches, but the kids stretch was just a bit too far, and that might be partially because I usually don't like kid shots.. Not to say I don't like very well done kid shots --

---
I know we'll never agree, but as I see it that's OK too... Well... It's ok as long as you don't mind an occasional 2 or 3 that is :)

Actually, when I saw the challenge with no description, small children were the first (well second after the food) thing I thought of.

When the low votes started, I thought maybe it was just a regional thing to call kids peanuts.

You see, the description said, "N/A" so silly me thought any of the generally accepted "definitions" would work.

So, it is *not* dnmc, though many of the voters chose to see it that way because it doesn't fit the "standard" or "first thing you think of" mold. Which, as a whole and overall, is terribly disappointing.

Way back when I first starting entering challenges, I remember someone (I think it was setz) posting, "When deciding what to shoot, think of something and then discard that idea. Chances are, if it was *your* first thought, it will be someone else's as well."

I've won ribbons here, and I've had well scoring shots, so I know I *can* do that. Sometimes, though, I just like to do something different in hopes of making someone go, "oh yea, THAT [definition/approach]"

Totally a worthy goal... Sometimes it works for me, as I enjoyed the packing peanuts very much, I didn't think of those, and that was a oh-cool moment... Like I said, I'm just super picky with kid pictures, and this one didn't do it for me....

Still, congrats on the almost complete collection, that's impressive, very impressive...

ETA: I do think it is a regional thing too.... You don't really hear that much in the west....

Funny you should say that. I have had no entries without comments and that's out of over 500 challenges...and then in the last 2 weeks, I get 2 entries through voting...and no comments....bizarre!

My impression has been that choosing the obvious interpretation is more of a contributor to doing well. By entering what the majority expects to see, you at least meet the challenge. Few people will vote you down for lack of originality. More will low vote you for being more creative, but marginally DNMC. If it is totally predictable and cliche, but outstandingly photographed, then it will do well.

I must admit I am guilty of being narrow minded. Even knowing that a small child might be called a peanut, I didn't feel it fit the challenge while voting. (Did not even think there might be such a dictionary definition) I can see peanut as a nickname. I call my grandkids "My Tatertots", but I would not enter a photo of them in a "potatoes" challenge.
