Glacier National Park has called my dad and I think he will answer with me and my mother to tag along. Does anyone live nearby? If so do you have have any certain areas you think would be worth the drive to get to? |

I grew up in Montana. Glacier is one of the prettiest spots in the state. Bring your fowl weather gear (you and your camera) because there's a lot of weather. You're pretty far north and pretty high. But shoot even when the weather's bad ... yields some of the most interesting photos. If you're in Glacier, take a long weekend up to Banff and Jasper. I especially like the drive from Radium Hot Springs north through the Park. Glacier, Banff and Jasper ... the perfect photographic trifecta! |

If you take the Going to the Sun road from the west heading east, as you exit the park into the town of St. Mary's there is a fantastic place to eat. It's called the Park Cafe. It has some great pies, but the meals are good too.
Also consider taking a ranger led hike to Grinnel Glacier. You will need to reserve a space and you'll want to take the boat ride to where the hike begins. I recommend going with a ranger, because there are grizzly bears and being with a group is the best way to stay safe. |

That's an awesome place. If you go there, and the Highway to the Sun is open, be sure to drive it. On Hy 2, N E of Hungry Horse, there are a couple of places where you can fly in a chopper over the mountains. It's an experience to remember. There is a great white water rafting place a little mile or so to the east of there. Its' still pretty cold up there. We went in late July, and it was still getting into the high 30's low 40's at night in the mountains.
Many Glacier Park was impressive too, and not far from Glacier N P.
The east side of the mountains is all big plains and rolling hills with hay and grain crops, the west side of the mountains is all forest, and lakes.
Whitefish was pretty impressive as well because the ski lift operates year round, and you can see many miles across the mountains from the top.
Some of my photos from a 10 day Montana run are here in the first two albums, .mac gallery We covered 1,200 miles in 10 days, and a lot of these were shot from the passenger's seat while on the move.
Any questions about the photos, PM me and I will try to remember where they were shot.

Whitefish was one of the most impressive spots I have ever seen. First, back in 1998/1999 when I was there, I stayed at the ski and summer resort on Big Mountain. It was $45 a night with my AAA card. It had a stove, VCR, I loved the place! The ride up was $10, and totally worth it.
I'd post photos, but back in 1998/99 I was using film.
Another place to go is Avalanche Lake. Ask someone there how to get there...and carry bear spray and go in a group. If I have time later, I'll scan a few photos and find the location of Avalanche lake.
Here is a dual photo from a "poster" I made back then. The top photo is the view from the top of Big Mountain (in Whitefish) and the bottom is Avalanche lake.

I would also suggest that if you have passports at hand (which I think you need them now), you head north into B.C. and then into Alberta. Come south on the east side of the rockies, across the continental divide and back into Kalispell. I did that trip (took 14 hours) but what sites you'll see!
One of the most amazing was Albert'a Frank Slide. A town is buried under a pile of rock. |
