All that "Apple good, M$ bad" or "Mac fags are stoopid" or "Windoze sux!" or whatever else is on the whole pretty brainless. Neither of them offers the best of anything, and neither is the worst at [insert favourite activity here]. Also, neither are going away any time soon.

I love Apple vs. Microsoft debates. They make me chuckle.

It's as though personal identity is tied to the product line they identify with and to bash that company is to ridicule the person him/herself.

Microsoft are getting what they deserve for all the small software companies they shafted over the years to control their OS! Apple, well we all know about what happens to apples when they ripen? The rot will set in soon.

I am banking all my money on Carrots! They help you see in the dark and taste okay:))

Hey, there's someone questioning the existence of a supreme being over in Rant. Better run!

I thought we were talking investments and stock performance, but whatever.

I can't find it >.<

I was mostly talking about other threads on gaming websites - I've owned both, liked both for their own purposes. Apple is MUCH easier to work with - plus, they're reliable computers. But, for that, you spend much more money on the machine itself. The ease of use is probably one of the main reasons they're required for students at VA Tech (can you imagine a bunch of non-technical kids trying to figure out how to fix an ibm? yeah. painful.)

Sorry for taking the thread on a tangent - back to your stocks.

Kind of like argument in general these days...

For the record I distrust both MSFT and AAPL with equality.

Actually comparing the two companies from a financial/investment point of view is difficult. It's almost, but not quite, like comparing Exxon and Ford. Sure they have some overlap, but they are really different. MSFT is an OS and Office software company. AAPL is a music and phone/mobile device company. Apple's ascendancy is likely cultural rather than making a directly comparable superior, cheaper product. Their gain and MSFT's problem is that our children's children may not know what a "desktop" is just like our children don't know what an LP is.

They are both considered "Technology" stocks. So they are evaluated along similar lines from an investment standpoint.

Apple has been in the top 5 in computer sales in the US for sometime, so saying they're only a phone/mobile device company isn't completely accurate. They sold nearly 3,000,000 Macs in the last quarter. Nothing to sneeze at.

I've often made the case that MS is at heart a software company and Apple is a hardware company, but I usually lose people on that point.

EDIT: I found the numbers and was incorrect. PC sales make up 33% of their revenue. I do not know if iPad counts in that category or if they are lumped with iPhones (which make up 40% of revenue).

I know they do other things, but how much of Apple's 222 billion market cap is due to their Mac sales? I'd guess it was less than 15% (although I could be wrong, I haven't looked at their statements).

MSFT makes the Zune. But that doesn't make them a mobile device company. ;) (I think you'll agree there!)

But Apple is a computer company, first and foremost. Unit sales in Phones/iPods/iPads may be higher, but most of their R&D is in computers and software. Now you can call them a notebook computer company without too much argument. The energy and development on their laptops far outstrips the tower and iMac. Although I expect they will announce a new line of towers on June 7th. Notebook sales is far higher in units than desktops.

And they have revenue from software like Aperture, Final Cut and Logic Studio. Overall these make up a small percentage of total sales. But they do invest in R&D for these products because they drive hardware sales, the higher goal.

iPads do not count toward computer sales. They may be lumped in with iPods, but not iPhones. Smart Phones are a different category. My guess is they will separate out iPad sales form everything else.
