I'm new so it doesn't bother me right now but what happens to threads with pics when you pass your 10mb limit and start culling your portfolio? I'm sure many 'old' threads will be missing good pictures.

They look like this:

my cat

my dog

my kid

edit: I don't actually have a kid, before people start asking questions :P

Yep.
I'm facing that soon, with my space usage at 84%, and I do cull occasionally. I could knock down my usage significantly by re-compressing all my portfolio photos, but the downside would be poorer display quality and the time required for me to do so. Not gonna happen, LOL.
There have been several past threads discussing "extra space" alternatives, including allowing members to purchase extra space. I'm certainly not among the most active photogs on the site, and if I'm aproaching the limit, I know others have faced this long ago.
I just had an idea as I was typing this, and I don't think this has been suggested before, so here goes:
How about a reward for members who renew? Each year, we could get another X MB of portfolio storage for renewal? Would encourage renewal, and allow us to grow our portfolios a bit each year, not have cull good shots.

edit: somehow the tail of my last sentence got chopped...

Good point Fritz, I only ask because if I choose to remove pictures because of the limit I'll cull what I think are the worst in my portfolio and as such I won't really care if links are broken but the site will suffer - broken links are bad.

I like the idea of 'extra' space for regular contirbutors/ long term members, or maybe just submit every picture to a challenge? they don't get deleted!

When I want to remove such images, I go back to the threads that contained them and edit the post to indicate I've removed the images.

Idea: Have indicators on our images with "referenced in threads: ..." or something like that. Links could become stale, but it might still be helpful for those that can't remember where they posted images.

I REALLY like the idea of "referenced in threads". Without something like this, it's nearly impossible to remember if a photo in my portfolio is referenced in old threads.
As the site matures, there are a lot of old threads out there that still provide very valuable information. It would be great to have tools that allow us to ensure the images linked for learning in old threads will continue to be available.
This is another situation that begs for more storage requirements over time. I currently have 11 images in my "workshop" folder that are mods of others' photos, posted in threads on photoshop techniques. I'm not wanting to delete them, 'cause I know these are referenced in "learning" type threads, but they are taking up portfolio space.

Most of the time, when I reference a photo (of mine) in the threads, I usually post it to an outside site (like pBase) and link it from there. The disadvantage is that you can't directly get comments added to the photo here at DPC.

Perhaps one day, SC will be able to tag (and untag) such images for semi-permanent storage as important thread-images. Tagged images would not count towards member storage. Maybe SCs wouldn't be allowed to tag SC images. Image owners should still be able to delete their images, perhaps with a warning that the image is considered useful in one or more threads. Hell, if the deletion happens, another question can be asked: do you mind if we make a copy of this important image to maintain thread integrity.

I'd like to see a forum called "the learning centre" (or equivalent) where useful (from the perspective of learning about dpc/prints/photography) threads get thrown (copied?) by SC/admin. I guess it would have to be organized for it to be useful.
