I need some help in selecting a few lenses.

I work in the regulatory enforcement world in Canada and my manager has tasked me to look into purchasing some lenses for our investigative duties - surveillance, scene and exhibit documentation, etc.

He was able to get a brand new Nikon D90 body earlier this year and has asked me to look into lenses that could be useful for what we need to do.

I have been out of the "photographic loop" for a few years now, so am not up to speed on any of the recent lenses and reviews.

We are looking for the following:

- a strong telephoto zoom lens that goes up to 500mm
- a wide-ish zoom lens with some telephoto capability
- a 1.4x extender

Since we have a limited budget for our purchases, I have focussed my attention on the Sigma line.

I need your points of view on the following:

- Sigma 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon or 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM for Nikon. Which one is better and why?

- Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM for Nikon. What do you think of this lens?

- Do you know of any lenses such as the Sigma 18-200mm that also have a macro function?

Many thanks in advance

I have the Canon flavour of the Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM and it is a very decent lens for the money. A bit slow on the autofocus side but I tend to use manual focus most of the time. To give you some idea of the quality all these were taken with it (best to click on view large size) Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM
