Say you take a photo that you think would be a good advertising image for a product, would it be ridiculous to bother sending it to the company to see if they were interested in buying it? |

Not at all. Every now and then it works. But bear in mind that if the shot is conceptual in nature, you're not very protected against someone saying, "Hey that's a great idea, let's have Joe shoot it for the next brochure!" or whatever. I have heard a few stories over the years of unsolicited shots being bought "over the transom", and a whole lot more stories of concepts being ripped off without any sort of compensation.
At one level, it depends what sort of product it is. I mean, the chances of Coca Cola, say, buying your shot of a coke can with Denali in the BG are a lot less than having the marketing director for "xyz footwear" fall in love with your shot of his boots outside your tent with Denali in the BG...

Oh, there's a reasonable chance they'd use that in their promotion; they have an online presence that's not ruled by ad agencies as much. Especially if you're willing to trade for gear :-)
