Ok so I saw this and it seems very interesting... but also kind of scary.
They are modding a camera that is not made to use lenses so that you can use wideangle lenses etc.
Take a look and please give me your opinion.
I want to do this but am very scared.
Here is the Image tut
The thread abt it

It looks to me like these mods are just screw-on adapters--you don't have to make any permanent changes to your hardware.
I bought a screw-on wide-angle lens for my Sony P&S camera a few years ago. It was easy to take on and off.
I don't think you need to be scared--if you don't like the equipment after buying it, all you have to do is remove it (and maybe even return it!). |

It's not that impressive. It's not modding the camera to accept interchangeable lenses, just to accept screw-on accessories. It's about mounting a "step-up ring" so you can screw all this stuff in. It's fine as far as it goes, but it's not much of a journey :-)

Oh, I see what you mean. I didn't read the discussion that closely. Welding does sound permanent, doesn't it?
You may be able to find screw-on accessories for your camera that don't require welding.

Not all those SLR-looking smaller point 'n shoots have that capability. My Fuji 4900z didn't; instead it had a barrel-like thingy that you screwed to the camera body outside the lens, and you mounted your filter to THAT, and the lens zoomed in and out inside the barrel, and it was a strange, inconvenient, not at all versatile setup. They seem to be talking her about converting a lens to accept filters that normally does not accept them; that's the sense I got out of it anyway. But it looked iffy to me, frankly.

| my nephew made a wide-angle lens for his point and shoot with thick paper, duct tape and a big door peephole from the hardware store. Works pretty good and i bet just listting the items used is enough of a tutorial. |
