All good points as to why you would vote a photo a certain way, but please remember that DPC Advanced Editing is not 'all is free and open' editing.

There are very specific and limiting rules that are allowed in Advanced editing - no new shapes or objects created. Cloning is allowed but only to remove imperfections and minor distractions. It is not digital art in any way shape or form, and many (including me) typically use editing that would be allowed in Basic challenges. IMO, it should be about the photograph, not the editing...but the editing should only enhance the photo, not create it.

You could even, oh.....READ how it works....

Scream eeeks... you mean some one can see my voteing scores??? Ahhh crap, that'll keep me from being honest... But, to justify my lower scores on LOTS of shots... "the camera bag" was advanced editing, So I kept that formost in my mind, then the origionaly of the photographer, the colors, lighting, composition, and lastly my personal do I like this photo.... Although I am not an Expert photographer of Digital art, I have judged quite a few Film prints back in the day... (lurking back to the shadows of the rocks now)

Sarcasm noted....again, for the record, you stated (in fun) that you do not want stones thrown at your photo....so (back in fun) I stated it looks like you are very good at throwing stones back (at other photo's in the current challenge).

Vote how you would like. I agree, be honest in your vote, and keep it fair. If you were a judge of film prints why not give an opinion to those that you voted low on....a good critique is worth a lot.

Just to revisit this briefly -- since most of those links refer to exposure bracketing (which the term "bracket" usually refers to) -- I'll point out -- what you are actually referring to is what Nikon calls the AF-area mode, which can be set to single-point, dynamic area, auto-area or 3d-tracking.

On the D90, access CSM a1 (custom settings menu, item a1 -- "pencil" menu, a/Autofocus, item 1) - "AF-area mode". It sounds like you are set to "Dynamic area," which I believe is the default. Select "Single point" (or the other modes, of course, if you'd like to try them), and hit "OK". You can also hold the "?/lock" key (middle button in the row to the left of LCD screen) while the "AF-area mode" menu item is highlighted for a brief description of each mode.

In single-point mode (my mode of choice as well), I also recommend setting CSM a4 (AF point illumination) to "ON" (default is OFF). Note this controls the AF-point illumination *in the viewfinder* -- this is entirely different from AF-assist illumination (CSM a3) -- the little annoying flashlight beside your lens -- I turn that off, too, but that's another matter. ;)

Thank you Cdrice.. That was too easy! I've sat here with the manual, and menu and tried to figure it out.. and some how I had changed it to area focus.. which was a mess trying to capture some humming birds... You don't get a second chance to reset the focus!

Here is VERY nice tutorial on shooting (err, photographing, I mean) ;) hummingbirds by our own Ann. I referred to it several times before setting up my own shoots here. I still need a couple more speedlights to really dial it in, but I have lots of hummers out here to play with.
