Don't. Scores supposedly reflect the photographer's ability, but remember they also reflect the amount of time and resource they have available to put into it.
Some have more than others. Myself, I have a full time (50+ hours/week) job, and a family. My time for photography is very limited. I don't really have access to any models (such as this shot that won another challenge recently //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=867395 ) nor do I have a lot of time to prepare shots.
This pretty much means I am stuck with landscape or still-life. I'd like to do more but lack the opportunity. But I can still enjoy what limited opportunity I do have (-:
Time to feel bad is if you spent a whole day on a photograph and gave it your all, and it gets trashed here. But even then, there's no accounting for taste. Remember most people on here vote within 5 seconds of seeing the image. At that speed, the only thing that matters for voting is the initial visual impact. I've even seen some photos score very highly that I personally struggle to see how they reflect the theme!
Bottom line - don't allow what others think to ruin your enjoyment. My entry into the current challenge is getting trashed. I don't care. I like the photo. I took it for myself. If other people like it, then great. If not - so what?!
If you're enjoying taking photos, stick with it. Look at some of the high-scoring entries on DPChallenge if you want to for inspiration, but don't let them take your mojo! |
You are so right. Every once in awhile I just need a kick in the butt. I do enjoy photography and looking at others photos. I was just thinking I need to pick some of my favorites and study them more. I do a lot of reading and looking. Plus enjoy learning my new camera that came in for my upcoming B-day gift to myself. I would miss the stupid update button. It is pretty addicting. Thank you for the pep talk.
You are also right  Sevlow What do the voters know. Obviously not the humor in some shots that were not planned. Thanks for the pep.

Now this is my lowest score in some time and I feel humbled. I absolutely love this shot..but nobody else does. Thats the way the cookie crumbles..
Would rather exit now and stop pressing the update button because it aint no pretty sight, and it's not getting better. I have to remind myself of which pic I entered and then forget the score. |

I feel ya, buddy. I too am scoring my lowest in a while, and I'm confident in the quality of my submission. Don't know why it's doing so poorly. I had thought before I started voting that maybe it just doesn't stack up well because there are so many good photos - and there are a lot of good ones, but plenty are mediocre (or worse) as well. |

This may be the last challenge I enter. I've been here for years, and am becoming less and less in tune with the membership. My entry here, I honestly thought it was a 6+ entry, but it's hanging around 4.5. Same level of dissapointment in the sports challenge.

You have 4 ribbons, 4 HM's, a profile page full of 6+ entries and a 5.75 average. I don't get why you think you don't get it. (Or are you are just referring to this specific entry, rather than in general?)

Nobody knows better than you Sam ;-) but from my own point of view I think you should stick around. Do what I do - take photos of things that you like. Dont play to the tune of others. You have a lot of talent, use it, dont let the numpty's get you down.

mine's at like a 5.75, and Tuesday was in the high 4's. Yesterday it was stuck in the 5.3's all day. I feel like there just aren't that many voters yet, and that the first ones were particularly crabby this time around. :) |

There are, but remember as much as we all like to see the high scores, when you reach a certain point those scores are more about popular appeal as about a good photograph.
Exibit A: Joey Lawrence's recent freestudy entry
A good strong 6+ score and 50th place, but a level of DPC success that many of the rest of us have achieved.

Joey is one of the most talented and successful pro's at a very young age, but here on DPC, he still has difficulty. It failed to wow a fair amount of voters, and some thought it was lacking. Popular appeal is a fickle thing. |
