I have the same lens, and I used it for several years to shoot Steelers games, and I would quite often have the same problem, and I have read the frikkin' manual. I hate to say it, but I think it's just a matter of a deficiency in the quality of the lens.
Since then, I have bought the Nikon 70-200, and have had significantly better luck getting it to focus on the right thing. The Sigma had always been a bit hit & miss when it came to focusing properly. |

For what it's worth to the OP...It is good to know that someone with four 7+ shots on their profile front page is having the same issue with the same lens. I'm sure the lens is fairly good and once you know it's quirks, you may get better at using it.

Hello again :)
Here are those of my shots posted on the website. fotbolti.net. The first 8 are mine, those watermarked.
Thank you for all your help and replies :)
oh and btw, I *did* refer to the manual both before and after, I must have overlooked the information I needed the first time. Those replies that addressed my questions were all helpful, many thanks again.

I have the same lens, pentax mount, which I use for soccer. I find I have a much better hit rate when I use center-focus. |

Good shots...I don't see a major focus issue. Some even look like you were "on" the field of play...we're you?
One thing I notice is that it must be mid-day. There is some harsh light falling on that bald guy's head !

Thanks, as I said, your advice was helpful :) I was sitting about 2 meters behind the goal- though to the left, about half way between the goal and sideline.
And yes, the game started at 2pm, clear sky and a huge white building to the left of the field. So, very harsh shadows, but I kinda think it helps with the bald guy's "bad-boy" look, he's from the UK and also coaches the team in yellow and blue.. Let's just say that I hope the kids in the stands didn't hear too many words he said :) |

Yeah those are some really good shots, I wouldn't worry about harsh shadows, you have no control over that. Looks like something you would see in a mag, I like em... |
