hey, im considering buying a nikkor 28mm f/2.8 lens either the AF-D or Ais version, just wondering how much people think they are worth second hand, both are in excellent condition so im wondering how much i should offer, clearly i would prefer the AF-D version but if I dont offer enough to the seller im quite happy buying the Ais version instead, im currently thinking about £100 which is about $150, any thoughts? thanks

Technically the AIS is a better lens. You can buy a new AF-D for between $245-265. The AIS is $530 of course it's manual but it is sharp, sharp, sharp.

I think if you can grab the AF-D for $150 you will have gotten a good deal assuming it is in good condition and clean, etc.

hang on a sec, ive gone and posted the wrong lens! its the 24mm AF-D and Ais, but are you sure for the 28mm ais goin for $530, thats a hell of a lot, must be a good lens! hopefully the 24mm versions are just as good

I think this is the best site to find technical and performance info about Nikon lenses. Ebay would be your best reference for market price.

the 28mm AF-D is a Piece of junk... with all due respect... you can find them used on ebay for $100-$150 easily...

the 24mm AF-D is AMAZING!!! (I just got one) it's VERY sharp wide open! Great lens! Used on ebay they go for about $300

The AF-D won't autofocus on the D60 will it?

If the D60 don't autofocus with the AF-D, then you will be much happier with the Ai version, because it's built to be manually focused. The 28's were sold as a wide angle in higher end amateur kits back in the film days. The 24's were a pro lens, and are still a Wow lens, even by today's standards.
The D60 does not have the focus drive motor to operate the focus drive gears in the AF D series lenses.

yeah im not bothered by the lack of AF, i currently have three other Ai and Ais lenses and only 2 AFs lenses, i mostly use the older lenses anyway, they are much better quality and cost a lot less! thanks for all you help, looks like i'll be going for the 24mm AIS

hmm, now im torn, ive heard a lot about the sigma superwide ii (24mm f/2.8), some people seem to love it, say it brilliant and better than the nikon, whether others say they are average, wondering if this could be down to manufacturing control, ie there may be a fair bit of variability from lens to lens. The appeal of this lens thouh is how cheap it is, ive seen one for ~£60 or ~$90... anyone used the sigma?
