I am looking to buy one of these two. I have no lenses. I do have a Canon G11 so I could share flashes, but that is it.
Perceived pros of the Canon
$100 cheaper
Lighter and smaller
Perceived pros of the Nikon
Slightly better image quality (sorry Canon fans)
Color correction for lens aberrations
I would happily buy a D5000 but I want to be able to use a 50mm f1.8 for indoor natural light shots ( I am not spending f$500 for the f1.4 or a macro AF-S).

| Of course I'm going to say go for the D90, I love mine. But in the end it's all up to you. |

It depends what you want. For me I was sick of searching menus to set up my camera for a shot. The ability to change 99% of the settings I want (except flash commander mode :( ) without going to the menu, and the ease of the top lcd made my choice that between the D90 and 40D for me at the time. Also I like the feel of the bigger camera when I'm shooting, it feels more stable.
End of the day Nikon Creative lighting system sold it to me over canon, I usually use triggers for set shots but the ability to grab a standard Nikon flash and light easily off camera, often just my extended arm, is brilliant. For cannon I'd need two expensive flashes or and expensive commander module.
Look at what you want from the camera, go to a store feel them in your hand. |

| Thank you for the comments. I read them and took them to heart. I ended up getting the Canon T1i after much hand wringing just because of the deal I got. I was basically able to get the 18-55, 55-250 and the 50 f1.8 for less than the D90 with a lens. |

Good job... No-one has mentioned it, but Canon has really, really nice glass available, and I wouldn't say my 50D (same sensor) has BAD image quality... All that badness is entirely my badness... |
