First the story.
I used my SB800 at my first paid gig about a month ago. I needed the flash to recycle faster so I put on the extra battery pack. (it holds one battery in addition to the 4 in the flash.)
The flash started to delay more between shots....the extra battery seemed to be doing the opposite of what it should do. I took the extra battery off and finished the job. The flash, with the 4 batteries acted up a few times that night.
Flash ahead....I was about to use the flash for outdoor use on a field trip. The flash kept powering down. I put new batteries in. Turned on...a 2-3 sec electronic sound. All seemed ok. The flash zoom adjusted as I zoomed in and out. Then it sort of made the 2-3 sound and would no longer adjust. I checked out the flash...changed batteries...etc...nothing.
I looked up a service center and found this shop. I sent it in. It arrived at the shop today. I called to verify that they had it. After a short search the rep said he had it and asked me to explain the malfunction. - I did not tell him about the battery. He said he would have an estimate by Friday. He asked when I needed the flash. I said late next week. He said he would try to expidite it.
He called back a few hours later. Said the tech looked at it. Says looked like it was damaged by bad or malfunction of battery. Said the zoom motor was damaged and had to be replaced and the battery contacts should also be replaced. He gave me quote on the motor with and w/o the contact replacement.
Quote was $145.00 with a six month warranty. Since SB800s are selling on ebay for $350 to $499, I told him to fix it. He said they will get on it and will likely ship out Friday.
***note...in doing my research I found (by reading the manual) that you should only use 5 FRESH batteries when using the "extra" battery. Oh well...guess what. On the gig I used 4 batteries that were used for at least 100 shots and have been in the flash for a month. The battery in the extra compartment was brand new. My guess is that this was the start of my problems.
I'll let you know if I get my flash back in good order and in time promised. If so, everyone should use the company listed above...IMO. |

I couldn't use the store, too far away, but as the owner of 2 SB800's and having just started using the extra battery, this was well worth the read. Also as a business owner myself, I'm always glad that people talk about good experiences as well as the bad :) |

I'm glad the post helped you out ! It only cost me $145 to learn. Unless I don't get my flash back, I'd have to say this company so far is A+.
I guess when it says to use fresh batteries...you use fresh batteries!
The tech also says I should remove the batteries from the flash when storing. He said that other than dropping or getting the flash wet...batteries are the major issue.

Sweet....The repair center received my flash on Wednesday. I just got the Fedex shipping email today. My flash will be back in my hands on Monday !
So it was signed for at 10am Wednesday and shipped back to me at 4pm Thursday.
If you need Nikon equipment repaired, I'd check these guys out.
