Are the Digital Rebel and the 300D the same camera? If they are, would you buy one or would you buy the Sony 828? If they are not which one would you buy of the three? You know, those 8MP are very tempting....

Yes, Digital Rebel = 300D = Canon EOS 300D rebel. I´ve been thinking of buying this camera but the Nikon D70 (still unreleased) is quite tempting. I dont know this Sony camera well but I would prefer a real SLR. |

In Japan, it's called 'EOS Kiss Digital'.
Any more country variations? |

I thought, and I could be way wrong, the Canon Digital Rebel was the US version, the 300D was Canadian and the Kiss name is for other countries.
I love my Rebel and I don't think I could ever go back to not having interchangeable lenses. The 828 doesn't, so I'm glad I went with the Rebel instead. I'll take the lenses over 8mp anyday. |

Yup, as has been said, they are the same camera. As for which one to buy, well, do you like apples or oranges? Really, there has been so many threads (not necessarily here, but on other sites like dpreview) comparing the 300D and D70 to the new 8MP cameras, but really, the only thing similar about them is price. Everything else is completely different, so you just need to decide what is important for you.
Here's how I see it:
300D Advantages:
Low noise at high ISO
Fast autofocus and no shutter lag
Ability to change lenses.
300D Disadvantages:
Larger/bulkier body than the smaller compacts
Expense of having to buy new lenses to cover all focal lengths
Hassle/Weight of carrying those lenses around.
828 Advantages:
Compact, ergonomic body
much faster focusing than most compacts, and almost no shutter lag
28-200 focal length in a single lens, so you get a lightweight, all-in-one solution
"built-in" macro (important for me)--no additional macro lens necessary
828 Disadvantages:
Much higher noise than the 300D
If you need a 18mm wide angle, or a 400mm telephoto, you are out of luck.
So, you just have to weigh the pluses and minuses of each, and decide based on what type of photography you do. |

The other thing to remember about all those pixels is the space that they are packed into. The 828 (and similarly for other large-megapixel cameras) packs those pixels into area that is only 8.80 x 6.60 mm. By comparison, 300D/Digital Rebel/Kiss Digital pack "only" six megapixels into an area that is 22.7 mm x 15.1 mm. This means that the relative size of the "sensor pixels" is much larger on something like the 300D, which means much better image quality, especially in terms of noise at higher ISO settings.
A large percentage of professional sports photographers use the Canon 1D. You see shots from that camera in Sports Illustrated, ESPN Magazine, etc. all the time, yet it is "only" a 4 megapixel camera! But the 1D has an extremely large sensor (28.7 x 19.1 mm), which results in some incredible image quality.
My point is that the number of megapixels a camera has isn't necessarily the best way to judge a camera... |

yeah don't be fooled by the large mega pixels, if the processor isn't up to par [as is the case on the 828] than you might as well just give your money to me so I can buy myself something pretty! [like a new lens for my 300D] |

In the next couple month the 8megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8700 would be a choice compared with the Sony 828.
If you plan on advancing past the hobby stage of course get a Rebel or 10D. You have a lot more options then the single lens of a non-SLR camera. Lens are pretty expensive. Granted there are cheaper lens of different makes sometimes you get what you pay for. Expect to lug 2 or 3 extra lens with you on an excursion.
If you've been taking pictures for a while either film or digital you may want to graduate to the SLRs.
Remember there's other SLR cameras other then the EOS-10D and the REBEL.
