Yep! If you don't like the rules of basic, just enter advanced challenges. Why would you knowingly cheat??? If you end up in the top 5 of a challenge you have to submit your original which will be dq'd as soon as they see you have cheated.

I had seen other images in other challenges not being dq'd (for in my opinion similar violations) so I took the chance.
I admit it was wrong, got DQ'd for it, and fully agree with this decision.
So what else do you need from me?

So can somebody teach me how to selectively darken an area in CS4 without touching the brush tool?

SELECTIVELY is the keyword here. No way in basic editing.

There's actually lots of ways you can do it, but they pretty much all depend on darkening specific colors or specific tonal values in the image. One of the easiest is the sadly misnamed "selective color" tool, which despite its name is legal in basic editing because you you don't have to make selections to do it. Using that tool you can change the relative hues/values of any of about 8 channels, most of them color ranges but also the lights, the mediums, and the darks. So, for example, you can darken the a blue sky with selective color before making your conversion to B/W in the current B/W Landscape challenge.

You can do this sort of stuff very effectively with Topaz Adjust too: it allows you to make global adjustments to the relative values of blue/yellow, magenta/green, and cyan/red, and it's very useful for fine-tuning B/W conversions.

But I don't know offhand of any legal way of darkening only the area you darkened in your lingerie shot...

Note that the other entry in question has not been validated yet, and may still be DQ'd for other reasons.

Semi-off topic;
Do discussions like these spur validation requests on singled out photos if none have been issued during voting?
04/21/2010 02:32:31 PM · #33
Sometimes. To clarify, sometimes an issue will be pointed out that we weren't aware of and we'll request proof to check it out. In other cases, the rule in question was misinterpreted or we can see that the entry is fine by the photographer's comments.

isn't this the second thread started about this same picture being DQed?

Quick follow-up question:
Does SC often check out challenges and see what is entered and create validation requests of their own?
I assume most requests are Plebeian based, but just curious. Don't recall seeing this in the "ask-a-SC" thread.

Sure, but most requests are from the regular voters.

No, he posted the image in the Lingerie scores thread (or one of those, didn't start his own thread) during the voting, after it had been DQ'd, and was asked to not do that until the voting was finished and the results posted.

Would you have been happy with this edit? Done with Levels, Increase saturation a little, correct color cast, all done with Photoshop Elements, and some noise reduction with Neat Image. I believe these are all legal in Basic?

hoped to get away with it.

What else do you think is illegal but do it anyways?

I did that all with CS4 but I wanted to get the rinkles out in between the legs where you can see it is a panty. I wanted viewers to doubt wether is where panties a tattoo or bodypaint. So I needed to darken this area.....
It's all so easy in retrospect.

I'm not a womanizer.
I obey traffic lights for the safety of my fellow citizens, not because I have to.
I don't jaywalk because I know that it's dangerous, being a driver.
Only really big idiots drink and drive, really really big idiots.
I don't trespass because I don't want to be shot by the owner of the property, who has the right to shoot you if you trespass.
I pay my taxes because I know it burdens our society if I don't,

So all in all from what I have read in this thread you don't give a shit about anyone but yourself.

No. I'm just a regular guy that you cut off when changing lanes without using your flasher. ;)
Or that guy you nearly hit while you were driving drunk.

I just checked your profile to see your age. I'm very surprised.

Have a nice life.

Over and out.

Can't "hoped to get away with it" be just another way of saying "hoped I stayed within the rules?"

good god! am i the only one who read the sarcasm in pjotre7's comments?? i would agree that knowingly breaking rules is a bonehead move that got him what he deserved, but some of you like Jac and Love are really blowing this out of proportion! I mean one shot entered and suddenly he's a self centered narcicist? get a grip. You ever make a decision then wish you hadn't afterwards? Bet you have, were you bold enough to admit to it?

not really....

"hoped to get away with it" is a lot closer to "hoped not to get caught"

This is all very odd, if you ask me. Entering a contest having knowingly broken the rules--I guess I don't get the mentality or logic. Since we know the top ten will be validated for sure, what is the purpose, to cheat in such a way as to stay out of the highest scoring images? And, at the very least, if one chooses to violate the rules, "hoping to get away with it", then when you get caught you should suck it up, not blame the system or try to sling mud on other entries. "Other people may have done it, too!" is a pretty lame defense.

If it's because of the selective desaturation, this can be achieved with a global hue/saturation adjustment, so is perfectly legal.

What concerns me more is your admission that you broke the rules knowingly and intentionally.

Agree with your concerns, this makes it harder for those of us who struggle even with Basic rules,I ask myself how many other occassions has this happened with this photographer and how wide spread is the practice, It just brings the challenges into disripute. Shame on you.
