Not all, mind you but the ones from countries like Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc have got to be the stupidest people on this Earth. I forgot to mention the biggest idiot of all, the Pope, with his condoms increase AIDS comments, but this isn't about him, only people like him.

what is more appalling is that such tripe is being believed by those it is preached to, and they use such garbage to abuse and oppress women.

The only teachings people in some parts of the world hear are from these clerics. Schools are not allowed to teach anything else so what do you expect from the people? |

It reminds me of the old maxim "To the carpenter who's only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." To the mad Imam, all problems must be caused by loose women.Earthquake? Inflation? Global warming. All of them could be cured by limiting the actions of half the population.
You think if you had building codes that would plan for earthquakes it might help? Look at the difference in deaths between Chile and Haiti. The death toll is something like 708 deaths in a 7.7 quake, compared to 230,000 in a 7.0 quake. The chief difference? Chile's government has minimum building standards, Haiti's does not.
That said, I'm pretty sure religious leader are no more (or less) stupid that the flock that follows them. As they say, where stupidity reigns, everybody gets wet, and I'm running out of dry clothes.

Originally posted by Reporter: The Catholic Church's position on the way to fight against AIDS is often considered unrealistic and ineffective. |
Originally posted by Pope: I would say the opposite. I think that the reality that is most effective, the most present and the strongest in the fight against AIDS, is precisely that of the Catholic Church, with its programs and its diversity. I think of the Sant'Egidio Community, which does so much visibly and invisibly in the fight against AIDS ... and of all the sisters at the service of the sick.
I would say that one cannot overcome this problem of AIDS only with money -- which is important, but if there is no soul, no people who know how to use it, (money) doesn't help.
One cannot overcome the problem with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem.
The solution can only be a double one: first, a humanization of sexuality, that is, a spiritual human renewal that brings with it a new way of behaving with one another; second, a true friendship even and especially with those who suffer, and a willingness to make personal sacrifices and to be with the suffering. And these are factors that help and that result in real and visible progress.
Therefore I would say this is our double strength -- to renew the human being from the inside, to give him spiritual human strength for proper behavior regarding one's own body and toward the other person, and the capacity to suffer with the suffering. ... I think this is the proper response and the church is doing this, and so it offers a great and important contribution. I thank all those who are doing this. |
The guy doesn't sound like that much of an idiot. |

I have proposed an alternate / opposing theory that it is the lack or shortage of loose, promiscuous, provocative women that causes earthquakes. To prove my theory, women: unbutton the top 3 buttons on your blouse and if there is no resulting earthquake, you will know I am right. |

Au contraire. This is complete idiocy:
"One cannot overcome the problem with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem."
His "evidence" for this position is a lot of mumbo-jumbo about sexual dehumanization. This from a celibate harbourer of sexual criminals. Sorry, but I am unmoved.
No amount of pleading, whining, or hypocritical posturing is going to be as effect against AIDS as a simple film of latex. |

LOL Wish I had thought of that one.
Louis said,

Why is it so hard for people to understand this? It's physics, plain and simple.
Colette, I know my comments were generalizations but I do expect most here to understand that I'm not talking about every single human being in the countries I mentioned. That much I do expect. No, not all people from said countries are stupid but the ones that make it to the nightly news sure do look like it though. |

The "Celibate harbourer of sexual criminals" is saying, if you treat people more than sex objects, you will be less likely to have casual sex that will result in AIDS transmission.
He's also not doing much "No amount of pleading, whining, or hypocritical posturing." He was on a trip to visit The Community of Sant'Egidio, which has started free AIDS treatment centers in 10 African countries. |

That must have been quite the trip considering that we are talking about an organization which was started in Rome in 1968 by a group of high school students. What you may be referring to is the Project DREAM, an HIV/AIDS treatment program.
With regards to the comment about "treating people more than sex objects" this is almost laughable, particularly when one considers the penchant some of the church members have exhibited over the last several decades.
This coming from an organization whose perceptions are so out of line with reality that they would readily sacrifice the life of a pregnant 10 year old child rather than permit an abortion, regardless of the fact that she was raped by her step father...you might want to peruse to contents of This...it truly shows just how archaic some beliefs are.

This from a man who has referred to his wife in such a manner that would indicate that he feels she is at most a possession and at least a second class citizen.

Like I said -- hypocritical posturing. An organization that would sooner see its ruling members defile the children of those in its charge before it would let them experience earthly pleasures (and then go on to give safe passage to those members, including allegedly from its most senior pooh-bah) has no business telling anyone the first thing about human sexuality. |

While Chile does have more than ten times the average Income of Haiti's $1300, the cost shift of building in a manner that will resist earthquakes, or for that matter hurricanes, is much less of a factor than of will. Building a house is expensive, and building one that is less likely to be your tomb might add 20% to the budget, and few people in any country will spend that extra money if they aren't forced to by building codes. In the San Francisco Bay area we have about five times the income of the average Chilean but if we weren't forced to we wouldn't build to code either.

I assume you're referring to me. I'm offended you would call the mother of my 3 boys 2nd class citizen. Maybe you're referring to my quoting of the bible in another thread (some time ago).

Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
|
Are you aware what Christ did for the church? He sacraficed himself and died for his church. So who has it better?
The wife who submits herself?
The husband who sacrafices himself and dies for his family?
I think both have it better since both are giving themselves fully to each other.

Essentially you just did the same. A group of people required to submit to another due to race, gender, etc. makes them 2nd class citizens by definition.

One proof of evil in the world is the rape of a minor. That is truly horrible.
However, should the innocent be killed for the sins of the father? |

This probably explains a lot about your personality if you view submission as being second class "by definition"...

Yes he does. He's talking about abstinence. Abstinence-only education has been proven to NOT work, and abstinence has been tied to a higher STD infection rate. |
