I find this all so amazing... It's been 7 and 1/2 months. I have gained nearly 1/8 of my normal body weight, and am still ballooning. (No not for the challenge). I exercise way more - in the beginning the long walks were to keep me from fidgeting and from going totally crazy - well it helped, but it's not taking off pounds.

But the weight gain, though now an annoying problem, is nothing compared to the whole body readjustment. The digestion was the worst - helped with enzymes and other naturopathic type stuff. Then there was fatigue. Now I am taking dhea (10 mg/day) and it has helped immensely. For the record, my doctor was no help at all; if it hadn't been for my friends' constant urgings and recommendations I'm not sure I would have survived.

Nor might I have quit without all your examples. Go peoples.

I think this just shows that we photog geeks are better than your average bears. (No offense to Robert, though I am hoping that he has quit smoking as well!) VERY few people successfully quit for a month, let alone 6 months, or a year. The whole weight gain issue, though - this is annoying! I am definitely eating more, in part because my mother is feeding me at the moment, and in part because I simply have a much stronger appetite than ever before.

Ah well. Lesser of two evils, I suppose, but now even the fat jeans don't fit. On the pseudoplus side, I don't have to fret too much about having all my clothes in storage - none of them would fit me now anyway! :-)

I gave up smoking for 10 years and put on 38 lbs very quickly ! It was amazing to taste food again :-)

...however I fell by the wayside and started smoking again a few years ago. So I am bad...but I did get the weight off...

Its been just over a year for me and I weigh more now than I ever have. Granted I was never very big, but I did have to buy new pants. Ob a positive note, my husband says 126 looks good on me.

congratulations to all of those that have attempted either of these very difficult feats! Of course a huge congrats to those that have kept it going.

I thought I would stop in and say hi. I found out about this thread when meeting with Max! in mid december. I was very impressed by how much healthier and happier he was at that time after losing weight. It really got me thinking about my own ever ballooning weight. (I could have used a photo of my belly for the "balloon" challenge!)

So in late december I decided to do something about it. I went cold turkey away from all fast food and chocolate and stayed that way for over two months! Now I do treat myself occasionally to a chocolate milkshake or one meal of fast food once per week. So far I have lost 30 lbs in just less then 4 months. I am 5'6" and was 215 lbs. I am now about 185. I have sort of hit a plateau for the last bit. So a couple of weeks ago I bought a bicycle to get some excercise into the routine a few times a week to kick start the weight loss again. Unfortunately I have only been on it twice so far. (I am really good at making excuses.... "it might rain", "its too cold", "the bugs are out", "I'll do even more tomorrow instead")

So I really need to stop the procrastinating and get out on that bike! Of course writing this I am procrastinating from shooting my "balloon" entry. (and no, it is not of my belly) lol

Keep it going folks.....it is the only side challenge that will help keep you alive!

Hey Ernie - stick with the bike. Find some nice quiet scenic places to ride, and a companion if you can. You'll find that riding is a very pleasant experience. Almost an addiction if you're not careful! (I ride three to four days a week, at 18-20 miles a ride, and am still gaining weight like crazy.... don't take that as a good example, though. I haven't given up chocolate!)

Hey. Walking is easier - less commitment to gear, and it is perfectly ok to drive to good trail, hitch or take a bus. and way easier to stop and take a photograph. Course I haven't lost any poundage either. I have, however, discovered stretch jeans - never thought I'd see the day.
04/18/2010 10:08:26 AM · #459
LOL! I just bought some non-jeans pants for the possibility of work clothes and they have elastic waistbands... too funny! (I figure it'll be like wearing sweatpants...)

It̢۪s time I join the club.
The plan, Quit smoking, reduce the consumption of beer to a few on the weekends.
Reasons- Save money (Utah is adding another $1 tax in cigs) and I think I drink too much beer (so does wife).
Health, I am a 48 year old concrete worker, something̢۪s gotta give..
Replacement- with camera in hand explore southern Utah, and capture my personal artistic view of it.

Start- Tomorrow April 19 2010

Good luck, Alan. It's going to be horrible, but you know that. But way better now than later, as I can attest. Camera as replacement is just about as good as it gets.

Yo Deb, I have a couple of hand-me down pants from my son - modest flares - I'm sure no one notices.

Alan welcome to this small elite group. We have not been too active, but the majority made it for 6 months or more. If you need some motivation, I am sure most of us would be happy to shoot you an email from time to time. Yes its going to suck, but it does get better sooner than you might think.
06/19/2010 12:29:05 AM · #463
Alan? How goes it?

Hanneke, almost a year now, yes?

I still get rather depressed but I suspect it's due to age and not the not smoking thing. Who knows. Is it a bad sign that as you unpack boxes and boxes of memorabilia you figure it can all be thrown out? My life's collection is just junk. That's kind of depressing.

I still have my extra 10 pounds and a few more have joined those ten. I will give up mochas here in a bit. Not totally, but I'll cut way back. That should help, yes?

Just thought I'd throw my $0.02 in here.. :)

I'm not so much into the weight loss for right now, but I've been smoke-free (mostly) since New Years, and entirely smoke free for about three months now.. And for once, I have basically 0 desire to smoke now.

BTW: Way to go all of you.. Keep it up.

:(..

I figure that's pretty much all of us in a way, largely because our actions and their effects on others are more important than our accumulated stuff.. However, just remember that stuff is there for you, and perhaps your descendants, just think how fascinating your great-great grandmother's "junk" would seem to you.. I figure you've got to de-junk your collection once in a while (I call it quality improvement), but be sure to recognize the true value of your "junk"..

Go Cory!

So, everyone else? Alan? Hanneke? Ernie?

I think I have finally lost a little weight - at least I have stopped increasing. (Don't have a scale at home). The big thing is cutting out after dinner munchies. I didn't think that was possible, but I am making progress there and feeling much much better. And there are very few times that I miss having a smoke. Actually I didn't think quitting was possible and that was really depressing.

Deb, I have way too much stuff. But the thought of organizing myself to clear it out is just exactly one of those things that triggers the urge to smoke. So I am ignoring it. I am allowed to do that, as I allow myself to do or not do a lot of things since I quit smoking.

Hey!

I've been thinking about posting here, but wanted to wait untill the 28th of june... then I've quit smoking for ONE YEAR, yay! When is your one-year-date, Deb?
Feeling great. Started running last week and that's something I can be addicted to very fast, I believe.

Guys, we've achieved something amazing here with our lives. You have to remember that!

I have to go now, but I'll be back ;-)
06/19/2010 11:18:10 AM · #468
Well my first smoke free day was 1 July - should I celebrate that as the anniversary or the 30th of June, which is 365 days? I think I'll go with 1 July - easier to remember, I suppose.

The problem with my junk is I have no descendants, just two nephews. They're not gonna be keen on my grandmother's quilt, which is NOT junk, but I do need someone to give that one to. Maybe they'll get married...

The rest of the stuff is just gonna go. I don't know where, but it's gonna go.

Hey guys and gals,

I was one of the firsts to be in this thread. Unfortunately I got back to smoke on July/09, after three months free.

Now I am back to the track, and 24 days smoke free. Hope that I can celebrate a year of freedom on the next 26th of June May!!

My weight is more or less the same as last year (107 Kg), and now I am planning to start bicycling around, to maintain (or even loose) some weight. Hope I can post on the Miles per week thread soon!!

I am so proud of all of you who kept on!! Congratulations!!

Welcome back, Jose! You'll do just fine.

I have to admit that lately I've been depressed - maybe it's the anniversary blues? But oddly, I'm so depressed that I don't even want to take up smoking again. It's weirdly effective. :-)

Thanks Melethia!!

Happy Anniversary!!! And CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations to all of you that have quit, on your anniversaries, and on every day that you don't smoke. Quitting is difficult, but SO important. A few pounds or kilos is easier to carry around that a few grams of tars and nicotine in your lungs. Ya smell better, too!

I am a little over 9 1/2 years quit. I don't ever think of it anymore. But...I still often think of the journey I've been on in that time.

I quit smoking right after my initial cancer diagnosis...yeah, too late! My 6th surgery for that bladder cancer (MUCH more common in smokers than non-smokers) was in February this year. I went through a third course of BCG immunotherapy in April and May that was a huge ordeal, but we hope it will fend off recurrence for another couple of years. I'll have a pot full of co-pays and co-insurance paid by the end of the year, instead of that new K-X body or 100mm macro. But I get to keep all my parts, and get to stay around for a while yet.

Let me add an extra note of encouragement to all of you: you've made a life saving decision to quit. Stick with it, you can do it, and it does get better and easier. And that little extra weight can be managed a whole lot easier than a case of cancer, COPD or heart disease.

Anybody figured out yet that this is an addictive behavior?

So, sometimes 'just one' sneaks up on ya, and one thing leads to another.
Harmless, perfectly legal.
Yeah, sure.
They cost 25¢ when I first bought 'em. (Lucky Strikes. Remember them?)
That was mumble mumble years ago.
I quit. 26 years ago!

Yep, I gained a bunch of weight. And oh, yes, it was super difficult.
But, I'm still here! I and my weight gain. I work on it, every day. But...it's still part of me.

So you don't want to look at me and my rounder body? Go look at someone else!.

If gaining weight is an excuse for continuing to smoke, nope, it doesn't wash.

Congratulations to those who have made it! You are a more complete person.

Yeah, you are.
