I leave tons of critiques, half and half for negative/positive, and get dozens of pm's a week and have never had a bad one. I also get alot of stuff like "wish I could say in the forums what you say" lol and here I am being all tame and well-mannered. Sorry to disappoint my fans! lol It seems people really are weary of posting against the masses, whether it be voting or just on threads. The trick is learning to burn people without them realizing it...........it's a skill. Really.
lol

Let's face it, we're all here to become better photographers, and to have fun at the same time. This isn't some cut-throat competition. I never lash back at negative comments or low scores as long as I'm learning something from it.

PS I'm not ranting because I submitted a crappy picture and it's getting low votes. It's still hanging in the 6 avg (which is a great score for me :)). I'm just ticked because the low voters aren't telling me what they dislike about it.

Good luck Tom! I enjoyed Recital and your next one sounds as promising.

There are so many variables to consider in judging a photograph! For instance, if I see some one has really tried (by trying I mean, they have gotten up from their desk and gone outside, or done some amazing setup work)..there are photographers on this site who blow us all way...yet, why give a derogatory comment to someone who obviously tried very hard, and technically isn't there yet..by the very nature of the challenges, they will continue to improve,if they study the winners which I hope everyone does, Certainly there are enough "how-to's" already on the site..I am not an expert by any means, and don't feel comfortable giving advice while I am still learning myself...although, I really appreciate technical advice from the experts...which I am lucky enough to receive..so I haven't been offended yet..Personally, I stick to encouraging comments even if I give a lower score and the work isn't quite up to standards...yet!

Comments are not about backing up the score you just gave to a photographer. Comments are to help the photographer learn from his mistakes or to better understand how to take a picture to please an audience.

After all, if you’re out to win, your ONLY goal is to please DPCers. It's hard for me to learn what that takes if only 2 out of 90 voters make a comment while I sit at a high 4.

The easy way out as I see it is to comment on a good image that you scored well. I get mostly good comments, even on my now low scoring image. Well crap, I like it for the same reasons they do, I want to know why someone DOESN'T like my image.

Edit:
Grammatical error :)
