Explanations are good, as long as they're not "Dude...like...what were you thinking?".
Post Script: Usually not offended by much, Goldberry is indeed greatly personally offended by the use of the Lord's name in vain. If it means nothing to the author, please consider the possible implications to others.

If you should believe that, try this. Review the old challenges and go to the last place picture. Total up the votes given for 1-3. Compare that total with the total number of comments. That should give you an indication of what others feel is necessary. Last check for the comment that you made. |

But theres a difference between a last place picture and a good picture. |

I try to comment on everything I vote lower then a 4, unless the only thing I can think of is to suggest that they take up a new hobby (then I may or may not make the comment). |

Well the comments on the high scoring images are along the lines "It's purty", so you want us to put "It's not purty" on the ones we don't find pretty? I don't think I should have to explain myself on how I score. It's subjective and this is open to people all over the world. Not everyone will see the same thing in the photos as other people will. It all averages out.

Many times I don't, simply because I don't want my inbox full of antagonistic rebuttals of my reasoning.

Using the
"Check this box if you're interested in having your
image critiqued by a member of the DPC Critique Club "
should help serve that purpose. |

I think it was TooCool [no? can't remember then..] who posted last week asking everyone to limit their requests for critiques...instead, whomever it was encouraged voters to leave comments. Check mate! Woot Woot! I've never won anything in my life! I'd like to thank the Academy, my mom, my dad...my dog..oh oh! And my dead bunny, Samson, and ... |

Maybe it would encourage comments if they were anonymous as the voting is, but viewable by the admin team...just a thought,
Paul. |

This statement, in and of itself, is the perfect reasoning for anonymous comments. If the comments were kept confidential I think a lot more comments would be made.
The admins, I am sure, could track trends in rude or derogetory comments and deal with them individually, especially if a trend appears.
Perhaps a week or two trial period to see what develops....

I may have missed a post, here's what I've seen
Originally posted by TooCool: Is your shot getting very good scores and lots of comments during a challenge? If so, please ask yourself, "Do I really need a critique on this shot or am I getting good information from the voters".
The reason I bring this up is that there are several hundred shots a week requesting critiques and with three challenges this week I only see that number getting bigger! (412 entries in Textures II how many will want critiques!) If you don't really need a critique by the end of the challenge it will help us to get to more of the folks that could really use them if you uncheck the little box!
Think about it!

I still read that one to mean that if you feel you would benefit from a critique, it's ok to request one.

Of course it's okay, he was encouraging people to learn from comments and to comment more themselves n'est pas? |

It's obvious Tommy_T doesn't feel his photo is scoring high, nor does he feel he's getting enough comments to learn what's wrong. I think he makes the perfect case for TooCool's example of when to request a critique. |

No anonymous comments.
If you won't put your name behind it you shouldn't say it. |

Agree absolutely, and if we are looking for 'backup' after giving a low score then 'et tu we must back up 9's & 10's also! then backup giving 4's 5's & 6's (in case we have lazy voters) even make commenting compulsory? (backed up with the voters credentials and technical ability to vote on submissions)
or even let things even themselves out naturaly - as they do now?

this site started with anonymous comments up until the challenge was over. i don't really think it matters. i get PMs all the time complaining about my comments. the funny thing is, recently i have gotten them from people who i have given 10s to.
i feel people are getting too emotional on both sides. people are getting very emotional about their picture and any negative comments are taken as personal. however, it's now turning in the opposite way as well. people are getting very defensive of their comments and are taking people's PMs to them too seriously.
i have gotten around 10 PMs this week on my commenting. some are thankful and some are critical. personally i don't let it affect me, and actually like to see people comment on my comments. it makes things more interesting. |

I am with louddog on this one. Annonomous comments will lead to a greater number of "Dude....." comments that aren't helping me get any better, though the harsh critiques that everyone seems to be afraid to send are helping greatly.
BTW: anyone that wanted to go back and send me a PM on "Boots" would be doing me a favor. I thought that was considerably better than I actually scored. I'd be willing to return the favor in the future.
Best,
Bill M. |

I don't think comments should be a annonomus at all. Also votes - can't see why they are annonomous.??

Tell me why tommy_t.
The idea of comments with low votes has been cropping up in forums frequently as long as I have been here. I still haven't seen a convincing reason to make it a requirement; or even a suggestion, for that matter. At times I have felt that some are venting because they got low votes on images they felt were quite good. At other times I have felt it was intended to intimidate voters into not giving out 1s, 2s & 3s. I know that I often have a hard time finding something intelligent to say about the photos I vote really high. Telling someone you don't like their picture but you can't quite put into words why, or that you don't have any idea how to improve it isn't really constructive criticism. I'll admit that I have given out some lower than usual votes since the rules have changed when I get a strong feeling of the dreaded Digital Art. But I am not about to attempt to justify any of my votes, high or low, to anyone. |
