		| | I need to get insurance for my camera gear. I've been shopping around, but I figured I'd ask what you all have. I travel internationally a lot and I am actually moving to Malawi at the end of the month. I'll need international coverage for around USD$10,000 worth of gear. I don't own a house/car/anything else, so I can't tack my gear onto another policy.
Who do you have for gear insurance? About how much is your premium? Who would you recommend for me?

 Thanks guys!

		| | I have a "personal articles" policy with State Farm which covers lost, stolen or broken camera equipment. They charged about $10 per $600 value I think, with no deductible. I had to provide my sales receipt to verify the cost of the equipment. I have no idea if they have a policy if you live outside the US though. Good Luck finding a policy!
Edit to correct cost of insurance.

		| | $550? Really? That seems really high...is it part of your homeowners or a separate policy?

		| | mine is covered by my homeowners insurance, anywhere in the US. We checked when we traveled to ALBQ last Fall. I was told I don't need to get a separate policy as it's covered. No extra cost. |

That does sound high...I pay less than that for my car insurance. Maybe I'm lucky.

Ya, I agree, unless it's for a business. I had $5,000 worth of equipment insured through a rider on my homeowners for like $3/month.

		| | The kicker is "Do you use your equipment as a professional?" If yes, the prices go up dramatically, at least they did during my fact finding. |

I forgot to mention it's a business policy, which also includes personal injury, property damage coverage, etc.

exactly. If you do, you can claim the professional damage (lost business) along with replacing the equipment. The ramps up the price.

		| | Thanks guys! I'm still trying to figure all this out. It seems like I might still be considered a resident in the States while I'm over in Malawi due to paperwork mumbo-jumbo, so that might work in my favor. I will probably be getting a "professional" package since I'll be working various photography jobs while I'm abroad. Sounds like that will jack my prices up a lot! Yikes.
If anyone else wants to pitch in what type/company/etc they have for their insurance, please do!

Might want to check what happens to your home insurance rates if you make a claim for your camera gear on that rider.... might not be as cheap as you think.....
