I have just been barely asked to take candids at a family friend's reception tonight. I accepted the task willingly. Odds are I won't be paid for it, but I am getting paid in experience. Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

The pics my wife and I enjoyed most from our wedding reception were those that were not posed and the people really didn't even know their pictures was being taken. Very Candid and not posed. It captures the mood and emotion of the day. Try and capture family emotion. I.e, when the bride dances with her father, if the mother gets emotional watching, capture that moment.

Technically I really don't have any advice for you. I have never trusted my self with someones special day. i may try and take pics at the next wedding I attend though just for the practice and just for myself and if anything turns out I will share with the couple.

Good Luck and be sure to share your results!

They had their wedding last week and they had all the professional photographer stuff. They just asked me very casually, but I am sure I will be considered the candid photographer there tonight. A quick question though, I know that flash can sometimes be distracting, should I try to work around it or just deal with it? Just technicality tips would help. But yeah, I am very excited to do this, this is a great opportunity for me. I will definetely post the results within the next couple of days.

I would avoid flash and go with the more natural look (unless you can bounce, etc.). Also doesn't tip the subjects off that you are sneaking around capturing their emotions and reactions. If you use flash some may feel weird and not look natural.

Although, sometimes you have no choice due to lighting conditions. 6 of one half dozen of the other I guess. :-\

I'm thinking this is more of a casual reception though being that the wedding was last week. (?)
