Hello everyone!
I'm going to Morocco next week with 4 friends and we will stay there for 10 days.
I'm flying directly to Casablanca and then rent a car or a van and travel around.

Of course I will bring my camera!

At the moment I have this gear:
Canon 5D and 40D both with grip and 2 batteries
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (14.5mm FullFrame usable without hood!)
Canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 580ExII and some correction gels
Probably gonna buy a travel tripod (weight 1kg).

My biggest fear (beside being stolen) is to carry all of this gear, hurting my back and/or not enjoying the trip w my friends.

What I want to shoot at Morocco is:
- streets and architecture: 5D + Tokina = 14.5-16mm. And 40D + Tokina = 17.6-25.6mm.
- people: I know they are NOT keen on this, so 40D + 70-200 = 112-320mm will give me some space hopefully not to be taken as people photographer and get some candids.
- dunes and desert: the same 320mm setup to isolate some pics. If I'm close than I'll use my 5D to have more image quality.
- textures, colorful rugs, etc... 5D + 50mm f/1.4

I guess I really need to make some options. I've never been there so, I don't really know what to expect.
Can you guys give some tips on what to photograph and what equipment should I bring with me?

Thanks in advance.

I would just take the 40D
Tokina 11-16
Canon 24-70
Canon 70-200
2 x batteries + charger
Loads of memory cards

With the lenses above you can cover 11 > 200 - more than enough. I know it is a pain to change lenses
but I would not take both cameras - less weight and less worry !

Look forward to seeing your photos !

I'm not sure why the suggestion of taking the lesser of the two cameras but I'd go with the 5D without question. There's no comparison between the two in terms of image quality and I suppose that's why you bought it, in the first place.

Joey L with a 5D and an 85mm 1.8...can't beat it.

eta: The 85mm was his primary walk-around lens in that series and it didn't seem to limit him one bit as this other image shows.

Much better build quality and environmental sealing on the 5D as well. Where you're going is a windy, dusty part of the world, so that alone seems to suggest the 5D is your best option...

OH I dont know about that, I can personally attest to the great weather sealing on the 40D, mine has seen, fine dust and sand, very windy environments, fires, been soaked more than once by fresh and salt water and its still going strong with at least 70K hits on the shutter ;)

I stick to carrying one body, personally I think I'd carry the 5d and the 24-70 as sharper than the tokina + fisheye, could make some great shots in markets and places like that and maybe the 50mm as it;s so light!! I'd keep the 70-200 on the 40d as it is really dusty and only take it if you really want the zoom, probably for shots from the car. I would really recommend a circular polariser

I went a few years ago, I've just stuck some pics on flickr, I only had kit lens then

Fez. Marrakesh.
Visit the medinas and mellah, the tanneries for the colour. Go to Erfoud. Seek out Berbers (Atlas Mnts.) and shoot them in or under their tents (it's bright here, very bright).
Go to Rissani and Sijilmassa and Todra Gordes.
Seek out the souks (markets) and do not miss the Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakesh. That's all anyone can do in ten days. Also,
take a good point and shoot for those discrete shots you can't take with an in-the-face SLR.

Lay off the kief or you'll miss the return flight.

Hope you have a great time. I was there 2 yrs ago. Marrakesh and up in the Atlas mountains, where we visited a deserted Kasbah, had an evening of folk music and dancing with the local Berbers etc. I was there 8 days and didn't have nearly enough time.

Morocco

As Zeuszen says, it's bright there. Don't underestimate how bright. Also, it's very dark inside the souks.

In Marrakech, which is really very touristy, you will typically find some people hiding their face from the camera, and then others who are very happy for you to take pics. However, typically they want a few coins in return. That or you need to buy something from them. The area in and around the Medina is rich with photographic opportunity, find a cafe, order a mint tea and let the world pass you by. It's a fascinating place and wonderfully colourful.

Everyone's said to take the 5D. If you only take the 5D as your primary camera, then maybe you would find a good pocket P&S to be handy, and a good little backup, just in case of a 5D disaster. A P&S does not intimidate young subjects, and can help connect you with the local children when you show them the images. Plus, you can shoot video with a good P&S without having to carry much extra gear.
Have a wonderful trip.
