I'm increasingly finding myself using my flash off camera with Nikon's Commander mode, but am finding it annoying having to go all through the menus on the D700 just to change the flash power constantly. I'm also noticing it's less than reliable with my SB-600 when the sensor isn't facing the camera, it's a bit of a hit and miss situation depending on a number of things.

I just got some money from the sale of my 18-35mm and was considering a couple of pocket wizards and an sb-900 (I didn't get that much money from the lens, I had some left over from the sale of a laptop some time back).

I know it seems like huge overkill just now considering that I'm only now getting more into flash photography, but I'm thinking that with those I won't be spending money now just to run into some other restriction somewhere down the line and end up having to upgrade again.

I know some of you swear by them, but it does seem quite pricey for something that there are a bunch of cheaper alternatives around so I thought I would get your thoughts first, I've been debating on and off for about 2 weeks now and I'm still stuck!

Why not buy a couple of strobes and a flash meter instead ?

I still need a way to trigger them, also, I want to keep it portable so I can just throw whatever I get into my camera bag, and also because I have a tiny apartment and nowhere to keep stuff :)

Triggering them can be either via a synch cable or your own flash - so that's the easy bit.

in terms of storage most of these pack away pretty small if you want to put them away each time and they would allow you to do a lot more in terms of lighting.

This video set is worth watching. It compares Radio Poppers vs the new Pocket Wizards.

Sounds intersting, do you have any specific in mind? I don't know a whole lot about anything other than the Nikon speedlights?

There's some discussion of ways to trigger over in the Strobist Thread. Response tends to be quick if you have more specific questions that haven't been answered, as well.
