If you really wanted to be snarky, those would all read "Nice shot." |

Mr. Negativity back again, to crap on new ideas! :-D
Seriously, I don't like this idea. I understand the annoyance of taking time to comment on someone's photo when the person apparently doesn't want your comment. But this isn't a good way to fix it. First, just think of all the "what does NC mean" responses photos will get. Second, those ugly codes will be part of your entry title forever. Third, a large number of people probably won't see this thread.

I'd be very surprised if anyone marks their entries as not welcoming comments. What's the point in being here otherwise? - Stupid question, it's certainly not to get comments given the decline in comments received. :)
Anyway, it's prompting me to deliberately leave comments on those few entries marked CW, so you've only got yourselves to blame! |

Well Kevin, I must say that the comments that were given in the scope of this test are very helpful.
They are clear on the good, less good or negative points. In other words: they are constructive.
That's what we're after, that's what's needed for those who are here to learn, improve.

Good to know that comments are being made. Sounds like some that are actually "helpful". :) |

It's been proven time and time again that the little tricks, nudges, groveling, whining, and other forms of requesting comments just do not work. If you want comments, post up your image in a thread or side challenge, talk about your image, and work with the folks who respond to get a take on your image.
You will learn as much, if not more by carefully voting, and commenting on others' images, and you'll make a greater impact all 'round by adding a hundred comments to the mix than begging pathetically for a morsel or two for yours. You'll find that you'll really learn when you vote and comment on challenges that you enter, especially when you see the different interpretations that people have on the same theme that you worked to shoot creatively. There's nothing I like more than to have an image flip up on my screen for voting, and have my initial reaction be, "Oh cool! I never woulda thought of THAT!!!!". I also look very closely at the images that are better than mine and study them to see what it is about them that I like, what seems to work, and to seriously admire someone's stellar offering for the challenge.
This is dp challenge, a digital photography contest, it is not, despite what people want to project, intended to be anything else. It's on you to make the site what it needs to be for you, but then the onus of how you learn from here is on you, if that's what you want from the place.
Personally, I think this place is awesome, and I have learned more than I ever imagined. What I have learned the most is how to extract the value, and education that I need with the tools and resources that are here, without grumbling, or begging, for more than what's offered. There really are no limits to what you can learn here, or through here, even if it's just a good tip on how and where to find something that may not necessarily be available here. I feel almost like I'm stealing when I re-up my membership 'cause for me, this the best $25 a year I could spend.
I'm old enough that I still believe that you can influence your karma......so if you want comments in a challenge, then comment on ALL the entries in that challenge. Maybe, you'll start a trend!......8>)

You are correct, but my reason is that as a heavy commenter I want my commenting effort to go where it it wanted. |

This is what I did, and I got some constructive feedbacks. It's the best way. |

Wouldn't that constitute a "little trick," if not outright groveling and/or whining? (j/k) ;-)

Personally, I think the "contest" aspect is the means, not the end ...

And personally I have done these things, however, it seems there are many would be submitters who have decided side challenges are better than the actual main challenges. I am beginning to understand why...there is always commenting and there is always a topic everyone agrees to and uses. No one reads into the topic, so there are no arguments over a point of view and there typically is no prize except for the education and insight of others.

Depends on your comment and how it is received. How many commenters have received a nasty email or been thrown into a scoring thread because a submitter couldn't see past the wonderful photo they took? Which reduces the commenter to "nice shot" or "well done" because they are unsure of what may happen next. Which is why I was trying to gain support for this method.

My question now has to be to those few who are trying this - do you feel it's working? |

Well, my average shot has had three comments that are actually good and not the "good shot" variety so I think in that way it has gone well for me. Can't say how the others who participated are doing and I'll wait until the voting is over to let everyone know the total count of comments. No one has commented asking about the "CW" either so evidently most knew what it was for. Anyway, thanks for your comment paynekj! |

I might have a handful more comments than I otherwise would have gotten (8 comments on a shot that is hovering back and forth across the 6.0 mark). I also made sure to leave a comment on the one entry I ran across that had CW in the title. So, perhaps a marginally successful experiment, but not enough people doing it to really tell for sure. |

It seemed to work for me (sort of). I did have one ask what it meant in another challenge... I directed the person to this post.
I love getting any comments...so if this is truly helping, I will continue to add it.

Would making it so the "I want this critiqued" checkbox left a note for voters to see make sense? It would making the checkbox a more universal thing so anyone could see you wanted it critiqued....
Just an idea, any thoughts? |

I agree that all people posting here should by definition want comments, good or bad.
If you do not want bad comments, isn't that the same as asking "What do you like about this image?"
If you have such precise questions, you rather have a structured comment form that allows to make a differentiated critique by filling in a questionnaire. And that should be done in a forum post as mentioned above.
I would not like such a feature. I assume, as said, that everyone wants comments. I only do not have the time to give them to all entries I vote on. The fact that someone points out to me that he likes comments, does not give me more time to comment on their entry. |

why don't they just make it so that comments are private- during a challenge and only admins can see usernames etc-? and after a challenge- (POST challenge made comments) show names-- probably been thought of but- its just an idea- i guess; its not like we cant report/flag them if inappropriate language is made- |
