A friend of mine has recently inherited an old Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Camera.
Serial No: 746274

Anyone have more inforamtion or a possible Valuation on the camera, depsite its poor cosmetic condition?

Thanks

The camera with serial #592571 is a Leica IIIf "black dial", a basic 35mm coupled rangefinder camera, made by Leitz of Germany in 1952. This was the first new model of camera Leitz introduced after World War II, it's rather common (about 71,000 sold from 1950 to early 1953), and it had a number of problems, especially with the shutter mechanism. A truly excellent example, with an appropriate Leitz lens (like the Summitar) would sell for around $300 today, but it MUST be excellent.

The camera with serial #825164 is the much improved Leica IIIf "red dial", and this one was made in 1956. It is more common (over 110,000 were sold from 1953 to 1957), but it's a MUCH better camera than the "black dial" version. A truly excellent example, with appropriate Leitz lens (you should have a Summitar on this as well, but the Summaron is okay) would sell for around $500.

Not easy to find Leica serial numbers online :-( That was from //en.allexperts.com/q/Cameras-3213/Leica-DRP-Ernst-Leitz.htm

Still looking...

I'm assuming the lens is the screw mount, not the bayonet mount. So it's an "R" model, not an "M" model. I don't know if they ever made a brass Leica, or if all the plating has worn off, though I suspect the former from the picture. Can you tell? Look at the parts that get no wear at all...

I'm not sure much about it other than whats visable from the picture. I'll have the camera in a about a weeks time so ill clean it up and post more pictures.
I suspect its a Russian copy.

It occurs to me that this camera would be an IDEAL start for a steampunk camera..

The Camerapedia pages for Leica aren't much help, but Bear's info seems to place it as a IIIf which is odd because it doesn't look like one: //www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Leica_IIIf
