Every challenge has people who hate the topic. This is nothing new. If you try to avoid it, you must avoid all challenges. |
My shot wasn't what I was going for, but after looking at the images so far it would have fared well I think.
To all the abstract submitters, you're pathetic and taking away from this challenge with your invasive dictatorial attitudes. You don't like DPC, leave. You're a minority here, a very small one at that. |

Can't tell you that, of course. But rest assured this isn't something "subversive", nor meant to belittle standard product photography (which I cannot do and envy those who can) - it is just meant to be fun. Not everyone can do product shots; not everyone can do abstracts; not everyone can do portraits, and so on. Yes, it is a good opportunity to try new things when a challenge comes up that isn't in one's comfort zone, but maybe it is also a good opportunity to try a new approach as well. By the way, no one in the abstract catalog is voting (obviously) and I think a handful have a score over 4. :-)
(PS - I may be pathetic but I'm not at all dictatorial. I'm really pretty laid back and easy to get along with unless I haven't had any sleep for days, which is true at the moment. Otherwise I'd not have even responded here. Hopefully you take this in the spirit it is intended in that I do not wish to argue, but merely clarify. Also, I am speaking only for myself here.) |

I actually thought that the abstracts were serious entries -- an abstract art catalog. I certainly have seen art catalogs, and I actually thought of doing something similar with my wall of photographs. So I just assumed it was a fun idea a people jumped on the bandwagon. If it was a "we hate the challenge, let's throw a wrench in it", then it's too bad. As for myself, I'm going to naively go on thinking that it was a fun, out-of-the box idea.

Thats right. It wasn't meant to upset people or forcibly change DPC or cause a revolution. It was just meant to be a bit of fun with the idea that 'abstracts' are often sold as a product, in shops, websites and galleries, and as such it wouldn't be DNMC to create a fictional catalogue to display them. I'm quite amazed with the level of animosity shown towards what is essentially a bit of fun with the idea. Jac calling those that played 'pathetic' is a bit strong i feel.

It is a fun idea. I think people are thinking of them as a blurry product picture instead of a catalog selling a piece of abstract art. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out the art angle, and I thought it was fun. I didn't think it was someone thumbing their nose at the challenge until I saw posts on here, and then I got a little worried.
I like the idea, I like some of the abstracts, and come on, people, it fits the challenge in a silly, but perfectly fine way. Don't get your knickers in a twist!

Yes, thats a very good point. Again, apologies for that. I could delete my original post of course but i guess that wouldn't make sense then. I really don't want to argue or upset people with this. |

Finished voting and what a range of photos! Used the entire scale and quite a polarized result with 12 10's and 18 1's given out.
You have rated 125 of 125 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 16 images (13%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.3520. |

The idea of having a catalogue of abstract pictures for sale is very real, and, to me, seems like a lot of fun. For example, desktop wallpapers - they are sold (a product) and are, often, abstract in nature.
It seems that in every challenge there will be some pictures that some will consider DNMC. The abstract entries here are stretching the understanding of the challenge a bit more than usual, but isn't that a good thing? |

Explain "invasive dicatorial attitude" to me and how you arrived at people not liking DPC. You can do that here or in a PM to me. Thanks! |

Hmmmm...I'm going to venture a guess he won't be buying anything, but customer feedback is always valuable! ;-) |

It's obvious that there was some sort of collusion with the abstract entries, and on a pretty large scale.
Is that a good thing?
IMO, what probably started out as a little joke has only succeeded in making a mockery of this particular challenge.
Well played. :-(

"Collusion" is an entirely negative word. Some sample definitions:
Collusion is an agreement, usually secretive, which occurs between two or more persons to limit open competition by deceiving, misleading, or defrauding others of their legal rights, or to obtain an objective forbidden by law typically by defrauding or gaining an unfair advantage...
Collusion: The action of two or more people to break the law.
Collusion: This is a method of cheating where two or more people try to obtain an unfair advantage by the sharing of information.
******
Exactly which of these do you think apply?

I can't really see how it makes a mockery of the challenge. The other entries are still there and will still be voted on according to their own merits with regards to the challenge. Plus, as has been stated, the catalogue idea is not in any way DNMC and is just a slightly different take on the challenge, abstract art as product. I also don't think collusion is necessarily a bad idea, or in any way cheating, it has been done numerous times before remember, particularly when the entrants are not voting themselves.

I've never seen it to this degree where all the entries are named pretty much the same and members decided on a common genre in all their enteries for a given challenge.
Seems to me a point is being made here outside the spirit of the challenge. |

Well since so many times entries run afoul on the spirit of photography and art, this is sort of refreshing. Seriously, what's the issue here besides it being a first? |

surely it only matters if those who are part of it decide to vote artificially high on other images in the group as it were. |

There's a product in mine and it was shot in a different style. Not sure how that is mocking anything or working outside of the spirit of the challenge. Also, the challenge description did not specify what type of catalog. It doesn't say, blah blah, typical catalog... and I don't think all catalogs look the same in the world either.
Why are people being such Debbie Downers about this? The scores are where you'd expect to find them so things are still par for the course. I just don't get why people feel the need to say so much negative stuff. |

I also wonder why so many people seem offended by entries which don't meet their expectation of a "serious" attempt to meet the challenge topic. If a photo is that obvious a DNMC, does it really take more than a couple of seconds to hit the "1" or right-arrow buttons and move on?
Since I have an entry in this challenge, logic dictates that the more "obvious DNMC" entries there are, the better my shot will do, so I'm happy they're there ... |
