You can set a variety of specific view options for each gallery as you see fit. Or you can globally set all your galleries to be the same. So if one gallery is just a portfolio for general consumption, you can make it public, and select image size, ordering allowed or not, what can be ordered, file names visible, keywords visible, comments allowed or not, etc. Similar controls on a private gallery. And you can set the image size that is displayed to be small, prevent right click downloading, etc.
I happen to have a "pro" account there (I got it as an extra from a Don Giannatti workshop). I am not certain what options are available with a free account.
If you happen to be a mac user, iPhoto and a MobileMe account lets you do all the private gallery stuff, too.
