Oh! I just remembered we have a couple of options in San Diego. Best one would be the Geisel Library or perhaps the Salk Institution (not sure if they are "bizzare enough" but the Dr Seuss libray could work). The Mormon Temple? I still want to shoot that at night- could be an excuse. Put a wide angle on it? Maybe some interesting places in the La Jolla area? Sounds like an excuse for a bike ride up the coast. |

I feel that challenges like this are more scavenger hunt than photography competition. Not to totally poo poo it, but am I wrong? |

I guess the challenges are supposed to teach us something. You are right that this is a bit more of a scavanger hunt- not something you can do from the comfort of your own home (unless you have a Hobbit Hutch perhaps) but rather to get out and explore the world you live in to try to find an interesting subject. Not just a house or building but a strange one. Something different. Maybe even an odd mailbox could work- or would voters kick that down as not being architecture- although it is an archetectural detail. Kids toys or shadows you can do anywhere. This one says "get out of the house and start looking around!". I suspect some people may be surprised at what the find in their own little "boring" towns and cities. |

Read the notes on the one I posted from Darmstadt. Or what JeffryZ just said. But you also have to take into account the light, time of day, distractions, how much of the building to include, etc. So yeah, there are photographic considerations as well. |

Well, of course we have those. But the question in my mind is will a picture that takes these things into consideration but has a "slightly less weird building" win out over the picture that doesn't take them into consideration but has a really strange one? |

Of course it will. And if it has a dynamic sky it'll do even better. It is still a photography site, and it is still DPC! |

Yeah, I would be surprised if the Geisel Library did not show up in this challenge. There are enough San Diego DPCers that someone should take it on! The UCSD Hillcrest hospital has some very interesting features if you are in that area. The VA hospital, right down the path from Geisel, is bland enough to be bizarre! |

I'm with DrAchoo. I'm worried that no matter how well I shoot for this, someone's going to win with a mediocre shot of a stranger building. Boring I know, but I've taken enough risks this week with my sucky fine art entry - I think I'll play it safe with Night Shot :) |

I predict it'll go the other way: a really interesting shot of a pretty normal building. |

I think so too, I am guessing Topaz will prevail in this one.

It would also be a good week to be in Prague with the Dancing Building.
edit: I see now that's Gehry also.

I think every challenge plays favorites in some way, whether it's access to bizarre buildings or the seaside or the aurora borealis or children or beautiful models. Having room in your home to build a small studio or even so much as a lightbox seems like a luxury to me.

Well, gee, you all have me so depressed with your "this will score better" and such that I just won't bother shooting at all. That and I'm already depressed that I can't get to the architecture in Germany any more. Heck, can't even be bothered to shoot for branches either. Bah. |

I guess that what the good Dr is saying is that this may end up being more about the subject than the technique, giving those who live close to goofy looking buildings or homes an advantage.

I went out shooting for this challenge the other evening. Got some shots that were ok, a couple that may be good, but I got some night shots that I totally love. So as much as I wanted to enter this challenge, I'm going to just have fun voting and leaving idiotic comments on it. |

Yes. Other challenges have ended up being more about subject than technique, and many photographers have similar advantages depending on the challenge theme. You just don't notice them as much when they are in your favor. |

Ugh. Grog like strange new caves. (I seem to have developed a recurring character in my comments.) |

I was shocked to find what was within 15 minutes of me and a 10 minute drive and one picture later I am in with one of the most bizarre architectures I have ever seen! |
