The link doesn't work, but my first thought is that teacher must really not like his/her job. |

Seems to me the wrong person in this scenario is being called the loser.... |

While I in no way condone or advocate the teacher's policies, was anybody else other than me laughing (A LOT) during that clip? That was an AP clip, and it was essentially about how a teacher was throwing tantrums and calling their student names. "He threw her pencil box in the hallway and she got in trouble for disrupting another class for something she did not do." I seriously want to see how this teacher conducts himself in general encounters. Does he steal people's milk and say "MINE!"? |

Sorry, but that kind of behavior wasn't uncommon in nuns who were my teachers back in my Catholic school days. Thew threw chalk and erasers at us, berated us, humiliated us, and even hit us. My sixth grade teacher actully broke a yard stick on a boy's back. And it never not once crossed any of our minds that teachers weren't supposed to act that way. |

of all the things to make it "national." i'm so embarrassed. both that a (local) teacher would do something like that, and also by the fact that if you are being interviewed by the AP, you think you could put something on besides a camo t-shirt and shorts. :/ (but that is as dressy/professional as many get around here)
eta: while that school is in another district, it is considered local and about 20 minutes from where i live

Sorry Karma, but I would like to see a legal precedent in this, as we are now encountering a similar situation, unfortunately the teacher in question( here) has only been verbal in the assaults on my daughter.. |

No need to apologize to me. :P
I'm just surprised this made it national. You have just confirmed my suspicion that there are stupid people everywhere, and unfortunately on occasion, one will find his/her way into the classroom as a teacher. :(
As a teacher, and a former public school teacher, his actions appall me, regardless of what he was trying to do. Several years ago, I taught with a guy (and frankly, was surprised that it wasn't this goofball) that did some similar things. The principal let him go before it could even make it to the local news.
(eta to correct the two sentences i had combined incoherently)

I didn't watch the clip, but apparently the teach spelled "loser" correctly, at least. |

The very sad part of this story is what is happening locally.
There are many former/current students and parents who are defending him. Apparently, this incident aside, he is a very engaging teaching. However, I'm concerned that the girl is going to have a rough rest of the year. She is the most unpopular girl at that middle school right now. :( Some of the comments on facebook are horrifying.
Interestingly, the local report has mom in a NASCAR t-shirt, but the "supporter" they interviewed is dressed very professionally. Not that the media would try to bias anything.
As it is, based on the facts presented, it is ludicrous. But, as with other things, I'm wondering if all the facts have been presented yet.
Local news site
(also, apparently, it was the mother that took this to the media after taking it to the principal. the student, by her friends' account was not as traumatized as the mother is letting on)

I'm not saying this particular teacher is right. It certainly seems unlikely to inspire student improvement. Wouldn't be my approach.
You're worried the girl will have a tough time the rest of the year? I'm more worried she'll have a tough time the rest of her life if she learns she doesn't have to achieve, that only trying is enough to get a good job, get into a good school, find a good marriage and so on.
I'm tired as hell of telling kids they're doing a good job when they aren't. Telling them, "well at least you tried" like that somehow excuses poor achievement. The world doesn't reward tried, the world rewards "did."
In my view, it's shameful to fill kids with false praise. Let them work, perform and either do well or do poorly. Help those doing poorly to do better, certainly. But for Pete's sake, don't train them that the world will love them if they do poorly. IT WON'T. |

When I say I'm worried about the rest of the school year, I'm referring to the physical threats she has been receiving, and the hostility that her classmates (and their PARENTS) are exhibiting on facebook, etc. It's rather frightening. A teacher calls a student a loser, her mom takes up the crusade, and a huge chunk of the student body and the community is about ready to lynch her. :(
As far as the rest of your post, you definitely lived up to your user name, because you confused the snot out of me. :) I never in any way talked about her success, lack thereof, or rewarding her for something she didn't do. I was talking about her physical well-being when she tries to walk through the Asheville mall on the weekend. |

Sorry, it wasn't clear you were limiting your concern to her physical well being ... and I don't have access to her facebook/myspace pages so wasn't aware of the physical threats. Certainly she needs to be protected. And certainly there should be a policy of zero tolerance in the face of physical violence. |

No, there needs to be an enforced zero-tolerance policy in the face of physical abuse/violence. That's just one of the reasons my daughter is in a private school now......the "zero-tolerance" policy the school had wasn't enforced in the slightest. We had enough after she was assaulted on the schoolbus, and was kneed from behind in the hallway and had her coccyx broken. Neither one of the male perpetrators received so much as a detention.
