so here's my dq
I cloned out stuff in the bg, then used the marquee tool to select the left third and jut blasted the pic with a hit of -100% brightness and highlights at 100%. Then on the right third, I simply hit the brightness up to +100% and highlights at 100%.
Then I selected the entire image, inverted it, then resized, usm and sharpen and save for web. c'est ca. So unless SC thinks I did too much cloning out of background clutter, I don't really know why I got dq'd on the grounds that I did. |
I believe that it's because you created three vertical bands in the background that weren't there to begin with? Was it just a plain background? If so, the three vertical stripes constitutes creating a new image (I think...)

Keep it close at hand. I have a feeling this challenge is going to have a few more than usual. A tip of the hat to all those at the Dairy Queen for pushing the envelope a little. |

One thing, DQed or not (and yeah, if you created a new background that will do you in)
it is a handsome piece of art.

Aww thankya, thankya verry much...
But a question. If simply changing the colour of the bg, in Advanced, constitutes a DQ...then how about images in Advanced challenges where extensive selective desaturation have been used? Not a murmur of complaint when I have used sel desat in challenges. I present:
However, dare to change the colours in an Advanced challenge, where you are told to produce a Fine Art image in Modern or Contemporary style, and you submit an image meant to evoke the spirit of Andy Warhol, annnnd....look what happens. You get dq'd.
Make mine a Peanut Buster parfait, Spiffy!

fwiw, if the division lines had been there in the original, it might be legal because you'd just be selectively coloring an existing shape. but anyway, your fine art will now get a gazillion views, and that's cool! |

As long as you change colors or desat things along lines that already exist in the picture, you are fine. As soon as you create shapes that weren't there before you get in trouble.

I know, but seeing that the challenge was Fine Arts and we were encouraged to go Modern/Contemporary, and Warhol was at the forefront...why oh why didn't they just make this an Expert editing challenge?! |

Because if it had been Expert Editing it would have become a photoshop contest, and that wasn't what Steve was suggesting. He was hoping for entries more reflective of the type of photography that ends up on gallery walls and in museums of fine art.

Hey..is it perhaps a good idea to have a permanent thread called DQ'd images or simply DQ's in which to post images that were DQ'd? Along the same lines as the Posthumous Awards thread. Or would that encourage people to submit images that will get DQ'd just to get into the limelight?

I know the Challenge says Fine Art but do you guys see a difference between Fine Art and Fine Art Photography and do you consider Digital Art to be the same as Fine Art Photography? |

I am still exploring it. I still don't really know. âWhat is fine art?â This question was innocently put to the Yahoo Digital Fine Art Group at the beginning of the New Year. The thread didn't end until almost a month later. I'm sure the questioner was expecting a simple answer and I, for one, thought I had it - Ha! As it turned out the question begged a lot of other questions, touched some soft spots, and evolved into a much deeper, and sometimes hotly debated subject. //www.digitalartguild.com/content/view/47/26/

I don't think there a difference I know there's a difference. I'm also sure that people that work in the realm of Fine Art Photography or certainly a major, major majority of them see it the same way. There's always going to be some cross over or slight expansion to allow for other ideas, no question BUT I honestly believe what the professionals who live and have worked in that realm for most of their lives, probably have far different opinions from the average DPCer.
wikipedia does quite well at defining some things but almost anything relating to art has always been it's weakest and least rewarding as are many definitions on the internet of these things. Since many definition are on the internet and have been written in our digitally minded times I think they've become conveniently inclusive of just about everything under the sun. When I read some of them the first thing I walk away with is "man, just about an old thing could be hitched to some of that wording..." and usually it is.

I came across this definition by someone. I kinda like it.
Art is a state of mind. When one creates 'art' he/she is putting down for the record what has moved them to create.
Art as a whole is everywhere! It is in the psyche and in our blood. It is what we see with our eyes, feel with our fingertips, hear with our ears...it is everywhere.
What one considers to be art, another may say is not art.
I create to fill an empty space I feel inside. To make something from nothing is a great motivator and only good comes of it.
Art is whatever one perceives it to be.
I see art in everything I encounter.
Ps. Another thought just came to me. Maybe art is the undefinable. Or if it can be defined it cannot be art.
Anyway, I am not going to rack my brains on this anymore. I am but a simple man and my views aren't important anyway.

any difference the pros see between fine art and fine art photography is an unfortunate limitation on their fine art photography. |

I agree with posthumous. Rules are rules, but it's a massive failure to be DQing images in this particular contest. Squeezing art into a box is to miss the point entirely. |
