Be brave and go with the one you like best!

Are you in Jimi??

keyz - if you want help choosing, I don't mind offering an opinion if you want, but to be honest I (like many others) really don't know how the voting will go on this one so Jimi's advice to go with the one you like best is the right guidance.

Votes on this one will be strange, I just have an hard choice between something strange and something more classic...

I decided to stretch myself on this one.. My entry is definitely one of the "strange" ones... Actually, from a DPC point of view, I think I'll get beaten senseless for it, however I like the photo, I like that it was way out in left field stylistically (for me), and that I shot it using a pretty bad camera(you can get about 2 shots / minute with it..).

In the end, I hope some people see what I do, but I expect a pretty sad score :) Dunno, of course, since I try not to judge my worth on my entries performance (hard sometimes isn't it?), I don't really think I'll mind getting beaten around a bit on this one.

if both are technically equal, I'll go with the riskier, strange one. that's just me tho

See, IMHO, that's the issue entirely, in order to judge technical quality, you have to know what the photographer was after, what were they thinking, was it "fine art photography" "modern art as a photograph"*(this opens an entirely new can of worms, basically, which movement were they working in?), or even more so- the even harder to discern "contemporary art photograph"...

So, to be technically equal is a hard, hard thing to judge here I think.. I wish people would list what movement/form they were working in on their titles, but... I doubt many, if anybody will do that..

Also, the whole "Make a contribution" bit, implies, to me, that the photo should not feel like something I've seen before, it should feel new and fresh, and make me want to take a step back and appreciate photography from a different perspective.

Just my $0.02

Don't overthink it - it will cause major indigestion! : ) Just submit what you like - you'll never figure out DPC voters, especially in a challenge like this.

Great advice. Overthinking is the death of the artistic impulse. Worrying about what other people are gonna think, that's the Armageddon of art. "Art" doesn't happen by shooting for a target audience.

Just go make some art, and let's all see what the voters and the jurors respond best to. It's a wonderful experiment!

It's funny, I'm really glad I put my entry in on the first day, I've over thought the heck out of it since then, but funny thing, I might be happier with the image now than I was before.. I really like it, and hope that some of the voters and maybe, just maybe the jurors, will like it.

Harold Rosenberg spoke of the transformation of painting into an existential drama in Pollock's work, in which "what was to go on the canvas was not a picture but an event". "The big moment came when it was decided to paint 'just to paint'. The gesture on the canvas was a gesture of liberation from value ΓΆ€” political, aesthetic, moral.

I think the same could well be applied to this challenge.

Well, after living with one picture for the past two days (and I really like it), I'm thinking about switching. I wish I were a better decision maker because that's half the process, I think.

I like the practice of testing an image. One good test is to let the thing sit for a while, then revisit it and compare the recent sense of it to that of the original one. Unfortunately, we don't have the time for this experiment here. Another way to measure the thang could be to hang it alongside others in an appropriate gallery for the context, real or imaginary, and see how it fares.

I sometimes write a little critical piece or invite someone else to rip it, whatever fist or wit available. If the assault goes through, the wood's rotten. If it withstands the impact, it might endure... Hell, kids are generally spontaneous, which keeps their response honest. If your dog pisses on it, well, I hope you kept the original.

Good practice to test the waters and, in practicality, this makes perfect sense. Unfortunately with only hours left before the challenge starts, I don't have that option. So do I go with the image that I did have time live with (and still like), or do I pick the one I took yesterday that's probably equally odd but in a different way (and I can hear my gut saying do this)? I'm really not expecting anyone to help me with this ... just saying.

If you can, Penny, put them both up on your monitor at the same time. Look for a few minutes. Go away, do something else. Let the screensaver come up. Then when you hit the mouse to have your screen come up again, which one grabs you first? Does it continue to keep its hold?

Or toss a coin. :-)

Thanks Deb. I did try that but they're both SO different! Maybe if I go watch the Oscars something somebody will say will click and then I'll know what to do. I have a coin in my pocket just in case.

I show them to my wife and enter the one she likes the least. The one she likes has received the kiss of mediocrity.

I'm sittin' on three scores of 6.3+.

This is the FIRST time I went with what my wife suggested.

Hmm.......8>)

"Incumbent spouse" ... now there's a way of describing someone's relationship to another I haven't come across yet, and I'm in northern California, home of the "non-traditional marriage" ... ;-)
