Ever since we moved from Seattle back to Brisbane, I have been missing a few things :-(

One of those things is ("are" + plural???) a jicama, which they also call a Yam Bean, as I have learnt. I haven't seen one anywhere yet, and when I ask for it, I get blank looks.

Does anyone have a decent photo I could carry around with me when I go shopping, please?

Something like this, but a bit bigger would be nice :-)

Thank you!

Great idea and some nice shots, but would you believe I found nothing that was suitable for a "This is what it looks like, inside and out" example?

I looked through some of them but I wasn't too sure what exactly you were looking for though. You could always use the results that allow you to adapt and modify and cut two together?
If I knew they were available at the store currently, I'd go buy one and photograph it for you cause I love jicama, but they are sorta seasonally available here.

Derek, I appreciate your efforts and I'll cross fingers that you'll have some jicama salad for dinner tonight :-)
I'm sure that one of YOUR photos would look great!

How about the image shown Here

Even an old fart like me can see that image, and considering how much much younger you are you should be ok, eh :O)

<------ rolls eyes at Ray:

Okay smarty pants, would you really consider that to be such a terribly suitable photo?
It is busy, it is messy, it doesn't show scale, it doesn't show the inside of it, it is small, etc etc etc.

I"m sure Derek will do a much, much better job.

P.S. to everyone: Ray and I know each other rather well, we're allowed to pick on each other. No need to be worried, we love each other dearly :-)

I have bought jicama at Parklea markets in Sydney, from one of the asian produce stalls. Doesn't help you in Brisbane I know, but they definitely do exist here.
Oh, and here: Jicama

Thanks Lonni - let's hope Brisbane sells them, too.

Derek, thanks a bunch for taking two lovely photo especially for me! They are about to go my iPhone right now.

The pleasure was all mine. Besides, it gave me a good excuse to screw around with my velvet for a backdrop and a nice reason to bust out both my SB900's, my Orbis, and an umbrella :)
It only took a few minutes and the fact that I could turn them out in such short order was a good boost to my morale.
Enjoy!

I've never had or heard of them. What do they taste like? (and don't say chicken)

They are crunchy with a high water content. They remind me of water chestnuts.
My mum is American, and her family uses them in salads etc.

Thanks Lonni. I may have to check them out.

this is a root crop usually grown in temperate areas. they are crunchy and a bit sweet (smaller ones are usually sweeter and more flavorful) and best when freshly harvested since it still has lots of water content left in it. the white fleshy portion is the part that you eat. its a great addition to salad or it can also be eaten by itself or with a dash of salt. they are seasonally grown in the philippines, hope you find some in Brisbane!

They're also known as yams. I think Popeye the sailor liked them, along with spinach.
